Shopping in Muskegon

Downtown Shopping in Muskegon

When I was once a little girl, going downtown was like exploring the big city! But that was almost 60 years ago, so a lot has changed since then…including more shopping in downtown Muskegon!

Over time, Western Avenue eventually became a new and vibrant space, with construction of new buildings and restoration of buildings like the Century Club. Local organizations such as the Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce, the City of Muskegon, and Muskegon Downtown Now put forth a joint effort to bring the city back to life.

According to Emily Morgenstern, the Director of Marketing and Advocacy for Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce, “Downtown Muskegon offers a fun and walkable shopping experience to get you that special and unique gift. There are three main shopping areas in downtown Muskegon–Western Avenue, Midtown (Third Street), and the Pine Street Corridor.”

So, what are you waiting for? Let’s explore some of these great shopping areas, together!

Western  Avenue:

Vintage Redefined

At Vintage Redefined, you’ll find a mother-daughter duo who love to repurpose, paint, and decorate themselves and the world around them. Together, they dreamed up this unique storefront to curate their creative endeavors! Through both a brick-and-mortar shop on Western Avenue in downtown Muskegon and their  presence, you’ll find select items from their lifestyle lines of clothing, candles, jewelry, and accessories.

Their website boasts of their “penchant for junkin” and declares that if it’s rusty, shabby, and chippy—they want it! They love finding the potential in all the things other people gave up on, and they especially love to turn them into something people want again. Vintage items hold such amazing stories and true ‘junkers’ find themselves“redefining” their histories and giving them a second (or third!) life!

Midtown (Third Street):

Spend some time in the quirky and unique shops in Midtown. Stop at Third Coast Vinyl for a great collection of records, and The Griffin’s Rest where you can buy any board game imaginable. Don’t forget to stop into Hamburger Mikey for an award-winning lunch and The Only Cannoli to get a decadent sweet treat.  Wander a little to find cool shops in the vicinity!

Harris & Willow

Nearby, at 930 Second Street, Harris & Willow is owned by Ashley Cooper. The store carries a variety of items, including clothing, accessories, gifts, and, most recently, baby items! Sizes range from small through 3X and they feature everything from casual and cozy to date-night chic.

“We search high and low to bring quality, yet affordable, gifts that you won’t find on Amazon or in big box stores,” said Cooper. In fact, all jewelry and most of their gifts are sourced from small businesses, many of which are made in Michigan!

In 2019, Cooper opened Harris & Willow in one of the Western Market Chalets. Six months later they moved to the current location around the corner, and three weeks after opening there, the pandemic shut them down.

“To survive, we began making curated surprise boxes. And we still have them today!” explained Cooper. “In the beginning, they were a way to connect friends who couldn’t see each other. But it has grown into so much more: encouraging someone after a loss, celebrating someone who just got a promotion at work, or simply surprising your best friend on a random Tuesday. We’ve sent boxes to cancer treatment centers, college dorm rooms, and even hand delivered to a few schools and offices in town. My hope is to be a place that’s a little more than a clothing shop. I want to be a place that cultivates community. And I want people to leave a little happier than when they arrived! “

Pine Street:

Cheese Lady

Pine Street offers a variety of eclectic vintage shops that offer one-of-a-kind gifts for you or someone special. In the same corridor is the Cheese Lady, which offers gourmet cheeses, olive oils and foods from across the world.

Two shops on Pine Street are the newest additions- both unique and worth a visit.

Polka Dot Paisley

Polka Dot Paisley, is a modern women’s clothing boutique featuring apparel and accessories as well as a carefully curated selection of home goods. Created in 2020 by the mother and daughter duo, Becky Usiak and Katie Hillman, this one-of-a-kind-shop had the goal of embracing variety in fashion and the continually evolving style needs of their customers. Serving all women who love looking great —no matter if your style is classic, modern, or eclectic —Polka Dot Paisley’s incredible line-up offers something for every woman!

Brass Moon Vintage

Brass Moon Vintage on 758 Pine Street held their opening debut this year! Owners Ryan and Jenni Schuitema grew up in the Muskegon area and decided it was about time to bring their 2000 square foot clothing boutique to life!

With everything ranging from the 50s to the 1990s, Brass Moon Vintage isn’t shy about making a bold impresson.

“Together we’ve developed a unique style, I’m more of the risk taker when it comes to art and furniture while Jenni is a pro at mixing eras and styles to create a cohesive but original look,” shares co-owner Ryan Schuitema. “We specialize in statement pieces when it comes to furniture and lighting and we have a sweet spot for vintage clothing.”

Added to their eclectic taste, Brass Moon Vintage also features several up-and-coming vendors that have a keen eye for local vintage who regularly debut new items that are sure to catch your eye.

Farmer’s Markets:

Muskegon is a great place to visit, regardless of the season. At 242 Western Avenuethe Farmers Market is one place to put at the top of your list, with over 10,000 visitors on a busy weekend.

In winter, the Farmers Market does move indoors on Saturdays and most shops are open at least until Christmas, but it’s best to check their website to see hours and days that they’re open.

Also,Western Market has 17 individualshops owned by local vendors and open late May until mid-December. Each season brings specialty shops and merchandise that isn’t found anywhere else.

Afterward,  a trip around the corner to Drip Drop Drink for their wonderful coffee , a stop next door to Harris and Willow, then step into the Century Club for more shopping, before walking down to Vintage Redefined. The possibilities are endless in downtown Muskegon- you are sure to find something to take home.

If you get hungry or thirsty, there are plenty of restaurants and pubs within downtown Muskegon’s new social district. Grab a social district drink from one of the bars and restaurants and enjoy an adult beverage as you shop. You will be back for more Muskegon shopping in the future, with your friends and family.

Rad Dads

470 W Western Ave Suite A

Located in L.C. Walker Arena and Event Center, this low-key industrial outpost serves street-style Mexican tacos alongside beer & tequila drinks. Tons of great dishes and yummy drinks to start out your night! Specials include $2 off Margaritas on Mondays and $1 Pound Town Tacos every #TacoTuesday. And don’t miss their epic Bloody Mary bar on the weekends!

18th Amendment Spirits Company

350 W. Western Avenue

Nicknamed “The Spirit of Downtown Muskegon,” this establishment offers entertainment, a restaurant, educational events, and a retail outlet. Truly a unique place to congregate, imbibe, shop, and enjoy the newly reinvigorated spirit of Downtown Muskegon.

By definition, 18th Amendment Spirits Co. is a craft distillery, but it’s far more than a distillery or bar. The building houses a vintage Brunswick bar, originally built in Muskegon, where patrons can enjoy exceptionally well-crafted cocktails at reasonable rates.

Socibowl by Pigeon Hill

441 W. Western Avenue

At its heart, Socibowl is three separate spaces- a full-service restaurant ready to fill your glass and belly, a duckpin bowling alley where your inner kid can escape, and an indoor beer garden with yard games, darts, and pinball! You can find all of them in Socibowl’s indoor beergarden!

When the weather cooperates, the best of the outdoors is combined into a fun communal (and oh, so kitschy) space.  Always warm and safe from the snow, the beergarden is the most casual space at Socibowl.  Here, you can grab a beer and play some games while you wait for your tables or lanes.

Burl & Sprig

333 W. Western Avenue

A unique place for the connoisseur and the novice patron to experience, Burl & Sprig offers six rums that they distill at their sister distillery in Panama called Las Cabras, where one of the owners used to apprentice 5 years ago. The rest of their portfolio is made right in Muskegon.

They practice the art of true mixology. Every single product they sell is made from scratch, including over 30 mixers. Using fresh juice, mixers are made from the highest quality ingredients, using techniques and equipment most craft cocktail places dream of.

They won awards at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2019, where they took home medals for their rums– beating every rum distillery in the world.

Rooted in the idea of seeing beauty in that which others may originally pass over, celebrating both the old and the new, and creating something that can be enjoyed by everyone, from food to cocktails.

They specialize in a rum-centric spirit line under the West Michigan Rum Company, borne from the unrelenting desire to distill, blend and discover designer rums of exceptional quality and taste. They also offer gin and vodka to lend diversity to their cocktail solutions but mainly focus on their specialty rums.

Pigeon Hill Brewing Co. Brewer’s Lounge

895 4th Street

You can’t NOT enjoy a great craft beer here- located at their production facility at 895 4th Street in Downtown Muskegon (the big blue building), the Brewer’s Lounge blends a mix of traditional taproom seating and a chance to sit amongst the towering stainless steel tanks.  Whether you are looking for a drink (they offer over 20 taps of craft beer, draft cocktails, wine, and cider) or a bit to eat, this taproom offers something for everyone.

Much like the community taverns of early American history, the Brewer’s Lounge is a community gathering space.  There are no TVs; instead, you’ll find board games, cards, and darts.

Seating ranges from single seats at the bar to small tables to communal picnic tables.  It is a place where all are welcome, whether seeking a moment alone, a night with family, or a chance to meet new friends.

You’ll find events here as well, including (but never limited) to run group, dart league, euchre night, live music, game days, and more.

Unruly Brewing Company

360 W. Western Avenue

Unruly was born from a punk-life attitude and the drive to make awesome craft beer. If you’re looking for a quaint coffeehouse-style brewery to sip on some dessert beer rimmed with sugar, this isn’t the place for that. But if you want to drink some damn good beer and kick back to some really great music, this is the place for you.

Located beneath the taproom in the basement of the 1890’s circa building, this 5bbl Portland Kettle Works brew system keeps fresh craft beer flowing to the taproom daily.

They are proud to be different- “We make kick-ass beer, and we bring an against-the-grain attitude to the craft beer industry. We are one nation, the Unruly Nation. We have one life, and we live it UNRULY.”

On any given day, you’ll hear pumping through the speakers the likes of Green Day, Mustard Plug, Johnny Cash, might get into Motown, or maybe even a little Matt Williams if they’re feeling down home and country. Friday and Saturday nights, they tend to kick things up a notch with live music on the stage bringing in acts from all over the nation.

Skeetown Tavern

1308 W Sherman Blvd

This out-of-the-way stop on your pub hop is not only to taste their libations (Voted 2019 best bloody Mary in Muskegon at Muskegon JayCees Winter Fest), but to enjoy their award-winning food (Voted best steak in Muskegon by MLive and voted best soup at 2020 Muskegon JayCees Winter Fest for shrimp and sausage etouffee).

They take pride in their hand-crafted food that is cooked to order, with homemade roux, stocks, and sauces are foundations for their dishes. Fresh hand-cut chicken is brined for 24 hours. Handmade taco shells, hand-cut ribeye, in-house smoked pork and hand-battered fried items will send you home with a full belly and a batch of happy tastebuds.

Summer

You may hear “Luge” and think there are only winter activities at Muskegon Luge and Adventure Sports Park, but that is very far from the truth. There are so many fun summer things to do that you simply won’t want to miss!

Wheel Luge

Hop aboard a sled with in-line wheels on the bottom to experience the wheel luge at Muskegon Luge! This summer track will have you luging over 320 ft of track, including two curves you will have to steer through. You don’t want to miss this track as it is the only one of its kind in North America.

Archery

If you want to learn how to shoot a compound bow, you will want to check out the archery course at Muskegon Luge. Participants will learn how to properly handle and shoot a compound bow at both bag and 3D targets. With the help of their knowledgeable archery instructors, you will be hitting the bullseye in no time!

Muskegon Luge recommends that participants can have a full understanding of instruction as well as be able to extend their arms while holding a 5lb bow for up to 30 seconds – this is usually suitable for children aged 7 and up. Adults are also welcome to participate, as bows are available for all sizes.

Book your session here!

Zip Line

Fly through the air with the greatest of ease on Muskegon Luge’s 1400ft dual zip line. Grab a friend and strap in for a memorable ride as you race side by side from the top of a Lake Michigan sand dune through the treetops of a white pine and oak forest! Feel the warm Michigan wind in your face while you reach speeds of up to 25 mph!

Chill Garden

Need to take a break from the high-speed activities at Muskegon Luge? Head to the Chill Garden and do just that. Take a rest in a hammock before your next activity, or try your balance on the slack line. They even have yard games for your enjoyment. The Chill Garden is a great place to stop and regroup before your next adventure!

Hike and Explore

Lace up your hiking boots and jump on one (or more) of the trails at Muskegon Luge. With four different trails to choose from, hikers of all abilities are sure to find a trail for them, including those who need mobility assistance! Check out the trail map here and see where your next adventure will begin!

Trail Quest

If you want to add more challenge and excitement to your hike, you will want to play Trail Quest while at Muskegon Luge. Put your problem-solving skills to the test on the hiking trails that spread over 300 acres of Muskegon State Park in this escape room-inspired game!

Each team gets a map with checkpoints that will be throughout the Sports Complex. At each checkpoint, there is a locked box with a token inside that is worth points. To unlock the box, you will have to solve a riddle with clues that you find along the way! Be the team to solve the most clues and collect the most points in a set amount of time to win!

Adaptive Hiking and Universal Accessibility

Perhaps one of the greatest things about Muskegon Luge is they strive to include everyone in their park regardless of disabilities.  All the activities found at Muskegon Luge are adaptable, including the hiking trails and Trail Quest. The park also has a track chair available upon request to assist those that may need mobility assistance.

Winter

As soon as the Michigan snow flies, Muskegon Luge and Adventure Sports Park get prepped to provide a variety of fun winter activities! Including winter luge, ice skating, winter hikes, and so much more.

Winter Luge

Experience one of only four luge tracks in the United States right here in Michigan at Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park! Better yet, it is the only artificial track that is made from artificial ice and not refrigerated – How cool is that? Participants are given equipment and training before embarking on this Olympian designed 850 ft track, including six curves! Feel like you are in the Winter Olympics as the winter air kisses your cheeks at speeds of up to 30 mph!

Ice Skating

Grab your skates and hit the rink for some good old-fashioned ice skating and hockey! Muskegon Luge’s ice-skating rink is built using the winter air to freeze water which makes the rink. Enjoy a nice skate under the winter sky and a lighted rink in the family skating zone, or bring your sticks and pucks for a little friendly hockey game.

Skate through the Woods

Skip skating in a circle and skate through the woods instead! Embark on a 1/4-mile ice skating trail through the white pine forest. Don’t want to stop when the sun sets? Have no fear, the trail is lighted every night – Perfect for a family night skate or date night!

Cross-Country Skiing

Explore Muskegon State Park in the winter as you maneuver through the trails while cross-country skiing! The majority of the terrain allows for a gentile ski through the woods, dunes, and Lost Lake. However, if you are in for a challenge, you will want to try Spencer’s Advanced Trail or Verna’s Classic Backwoods Trail. The trails are groomed daily, if weather permits, and accommodate both gliding and skate skiing! All trails are lighted every night until the park closes, so you can pack in as much fun on the winter days.

Easy to Advanced Trails

Our ski trails are well marked, and easy-to-read trail maps are provided with a trail pass. The complex has five different trail systems for all level skiers. Start on an easy, flat trail like the 2.5-kilometer White Night Trail. Our 5-kilometer Lost Lake Trail will take you up on the dune ridge and down to Lost Lake. You can work your way up to Spencer’s Advanced 2 Kilometer Trail or Verna’s Classic Backwoods Trail for a challenge.

Snow Shoeing

Gain access to some breathtaking views of Lake Michigan and Muskegon lake when you snowshoe the trails at Muskegon Luge. The trail system is made up of four loops ranging in difficulty. If you are up for a challenge, you will want to be sure to try Highlands Loop for a great view of Lake Michigan from atop a sand dune! All of the trails are groomed and marked to help guide you along your way. Although the snowshoeing trails are not lighted, they are easily accessible with a quality headlamp.
