ABOUT NEWAYGO

Indigenous culture has influenced Newaygo since before 100 B.C. when Native American Tribal Communities like the Hopewell and Ottawa Bands flourished here. They were masterful hunters, fishers, and trappers of this beautiful midwestern landscape and truly respected the environment around them.

There are many legends about the name chosen for Newaygo. It’s believed it was derived from a Native American man named, Nah-way-gon. He had a reputation for bravery and strength, and was known for his courage on the battlefield.

Now, Newaygo has evolved into a thriving, energetic, and beautiful community with echoes of its indigenous roots via a thriving salmon and trout population that serves as its own attraction to fishermen near and far. There are also a variety of events and attractions to suit any interest, from the Heritage Museum of Newaygo County to The Stream, a creative space in the heart of the city. Nature lovers will enjoy everything from fishing to canoeing, kayaking, or even tubing on the pristine Muskegon River!

Still looking for more? No worries! Henning Park provides disc golfers and mountain bikers the perfect venue for fun outdoor excursions. Dining and the night scene also leave no stone unturned in the activities available. Visit River Country Chamber of Commerce of Newago County for more information on events and attractions on their website.
