The Shopping Malls of Grand Rapids
Hey Grand Rapids, It is time to go shopping! Have you ever walked inside the doors to a shopping mall and lost your sense of time and geography? That feeling actually has a name, it is called “Gruen Transfer”. The term was inspired by Victor Gruen, who designed and built the first shopping center in the Detroit suburb of Southfield. It was his vision that created the now universally popular shopping malls. So, what do you say? If you are ready to grab coffee and walk around, or get lost , in the mall, here are the shopping spots that you can explore in West Michigan.

RiverTown Crossings Mall
One of the more popular shopping malls in Grand Rapids, RiverTown Crossings has been around since 1999. The 24 year old mall is given a 4.4 star rating on google reviews, and is well known for the food court, movie theater carousel, build-a-bear and over 100 stores. A few of the stores include Macy’s, JCPenney, Kohl’s, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Barnes & Noble. RiverTown also offers a community discount program to First Responders, military, and students. This mall is a fun place to shop with the kids no matter the age. There are many options to choose from at the food court and you can even catch a movie between shopping at the Celebration Cinema.
Woodland Mall
Woodland Mall is another enclosed mall in Grand Rapids. This one level super regional mall is home to over 100 stores as well as a food court and a movie theater. Between stores there are recharging stations and a children’s play area to rest, recharge and entertain. A few of the 100 stores include, Apple, Von Maur, Pottery Barn, Urban Outfitters, Altar’d State and The North Face. There is no shortage of food choices either. Shoppers are able to grab a snack in the food court or enjoy a full service dining at The Cheesecake Factory, Black Rock Bar & Grill, or On The Border. To end a day of shopping, you can also catch a movie at Phoenix Theatres.
Tanger Outlets
Tanger Outlets is a shopping-mall chain that features a wide variety of brand name and designer outlet stores. There are over 100 brands at very affordable prices. Tanger Outlets also has a shoppers club that people can sign up for to receive even more savings. A few of the perks are VIP parking, personalized deals, and birthday gifts. A few stores from the great selection include Lucky Brand, Nike, Old Navy, and J. Crew. There is also a Five Lakes BrewPub, a brewery to enjoy some food and drinks as well.
Green Ridge Square Mall
Green Ridge Square Mall is located on Alpine in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Inside this Midtown West Michigan Plaza, there are 29 stores to choose from. A few of the stores that shoppers will find here include, Best Buy, T.J. Max, Bed, Bath & Beyond and Target. If all the shopping stimulates an appetite, there are also a few restaurants as well. A few of the store fronts that are offering food are Panera Bread, Three Happiness Chinese, and Honey Baked Ham.
Breton Village Shopping Center
West Michigan’s Breton Village offers Grand Rapids shoppers a unique experience. One reason that this particular shopping center stands out amongst the others, is its tasteful balance of locally owned boutiques and name-brand retailers. It is nice to see smaller businesses being featured with the larger companies. And, it also helps to provide a variety of shopping choices to visitors. Breton Village features many fashion leaders like Leigh’s, Free People, Lululemon and Anthropologie. There are also options for visitors to get something to eat if hungry. A few of the restaurants here are, Cafe de Miro, Core Life and Bobcat’ Bonnies. Breton Village is ready to provide a one-of-a-kind shopping experience.
The Village at Knapp’s Crossing
The Village at Knapp’s Crossing is a retail strip that has been around, as the locals know, for quite some time and has proven to be a much-needed addition to Grand Rapids’ East Beltline. A few of the major stores that can be found at The Village are Ulta, Five Below, Old Navy and D&W Fresh Market. If you are needing a bite to eat, PF Changs offers shoppers a delightful eating experience. The Village is also conveniently located between three universities and several businesses, making it a popular spot for lunch breaks.
