While the lakes of West Michigan bring visitors from all over, we shouldn’t overlook rivers and streams for their ability to bring out the best of what nature has to offer. Historically, they were the original highways throughout what was once untamed wilderness. Fortunately, some of this wilderness survives, and within the forests run the very waterways that once carried indigenous people who were the first on the land.

Now, rivers throughout West Michigan offer many recreational opportunities, from kayaking, canoeing, tubing, and other types of entertainment like bird watching, fishing, and even exploring native plants and animals. Here are a few of the most popular rivers that welcome us to partake of the beauty of nature.

The Grand River Heritage Water Trail

The Grand River represents a tremendous recreational resource that is available for use and enjoyment by many for peaceful paddling, the exploration of parks and other sites, learning about the river’s natural characteristics, and discovery of the rich human history of Ottawa County tied directly to the river.

The Grand River Heritage Water Trail is a 41-mile water trail that encompasses nine distinct routes along the Grand River in Ottawa County. The slow, meandering river averages about 3 miles per hour, making it an ideal river to explore and see many of the natural and cultural assets along its shoreline. Paddlers can access the water trail at 18 different access points along the trail.

The Grand River has six tributaries, which are Red Cedar River, Looking Glass River, Maple River, Flat River, Thornapple River, and Rogue River. The Grand River that flows through downtown Grand Rapids is a major focus of the aquatic adventure. You can launch your own watercraft from nine local public access sites, rent a canoe or kayak for a guided tour, even take a scenic paddlewheel riverboat cruise. Three close-by tributary rivers – Flat River, Rogue River and Thornapple River – offer additional boating opportunities.

Muskegon River Water Trail

The Muskegon River is a 216-mile-long river in the Lower Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan. From its source at Houghton Lake in Roscommon County, the river flows in a generally southwesterly direction to its mouth at Lake Michigan at the eponymous city of Muskegon. Wikipedia

The Muskegon River finds its source in the Houghton Lake area, in the north-central portion of Michigan’s lower peninsula.  It winds its way over 200 miles to empty into Muskegon Lake, which is connected to lake Michigan by a long channel. This river is a big tailwater and is most effectively fished from a drift boat or jet sled. When stealth and easy movement are a necessity, driftboats are your best bet. A jet sled, though, can get you to and from certain “hot spots” quickly and safely while also giving you more time to fly fish.  That being said, it has several good areas for walk-in anglers who want to wade fish in the river.  A fair amount of public land is in the first 6+ miles of river, below Croton hydroelectric dam, just east of Newaygo.

White River Water Trail

The White River is a 23.6-mile-long river located on the western side of the Lower Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan. Its source is the Oxford Swamp in Newaygo County. The rural town of Hesperia borders the river. Wikipedia

Thornapple River

This 88-mile-long tributary of the Grand River is a popular fishing, boating and tubing destination. Fishing access is plentiful and watercraft rentals are available from several businesses along the river route. GR Paddling offers guided tours ranging in length from three to 10 miles. A 125-foot-long wooden pedestrian bridge spans the Thornapple in Ada, 10 miles east of Grand Rapids.

Rogue River Water Trail

The White River is a 23.6-mile-long river located on the western side of the Lower Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan. Its source is the Oxford Swamp in Newaygo County. The rural town of Hesperia borders the river. Wikipedia

This 48-mile long tributary of the Grand River runs through the town of Rockford and is a popular destination for trout fishing and scenic cruises.

Flat River Water Trail

The Flat river is a warm water fishery that empties into the Grand River in the town of Lowell, Michigan.   It’s a short 15 minute drive east of Grand Rapids to reach this small town and quality Smallmouth Bass fishery just off I-96.

This Grand River tributary flows peacefully through the city of Lowell, where the Flat River Grill offers patio views of the water and the historic Lowell Showboat. The Flat has a reputation as an excellent smallmouth bass stream and different stretches are ideal for float-type fishing and wading. Much of the river is canoeable, especially in the spring and summer.

Ivanrest Church’s annual community Easter Eggstravaganza will be Saturday, April 19th at 10:30 AM. This family fun event will begin on the front lawn with an Easter egg hunt for kids ages 1-10. Following the egg hunt, join us in the West Wing for crafts, snacks, face painting and a special story time! Feel free to invite your family, friends, and neighbors.

Belmont- Chandler Woods Spring Egg Hunt

Please join Chandler Woods for their annual Spring Egg Hunt on April 18th, for kids 12 and under. From 5:30 to 8:30 p.m at Dr. A.J. Chandler Park: Stage Plaza, families can take part in a variety of activities including the 24 Karrot Trail, where children under nine can scavenge for eggs containing candy or prizes.

A special “golden karrot” egg will even score some lucky kids a unique prize, according to a recent press release. But that’s not all the Easter bunny has in store. Every family in attendance will have the chance to snag an Easter basket full of goodies through a free drawing, with the winner announced at 7:40 p.m. 

The little ones can also look forward to carnival games, inflatable attractions, and a visit from the Easter Bunny for those all-important holiday snaps.

Community Easter Egg Hunt at Thornapple Community Church

Thornapple’s favorite annual event of the year is back! Egg hunts are split into two sessions, A and B, starting at 9:30 and then 11am. 

In 2022, they hid over 10,600 eggs on their property and handed out over 250 prizes. This is a free event, however they will be collecting donations ****if you feel led! All donations collected will go towards their summer camp program, Camp Thornapple. Funds will help subsidize the cost so kids can participate in classes at half the cost (or less!) of their value. Donations also help fully cover the cost for any child who wants to participate but can’t due to financial restraints.

Make sure to remember to redeem your prizes and keep your eggs to recycle later!

Taking advantage of Michigan’s cold climate, the World of Winter Festival provides an interesting way for people to enjoy their time in the beautiful West Michigan snow. This year’s event runs from January 10 through March 2. The purpose of this festival is to encourage families to be more active, even during the colder months while enjoying and appreciating different cultures and art pieces. With over 25 art exhibitions, live music, games for the whole family, amazing ice sculptures, and much more – there is plenty to keep you active and warm during this free and mesmerizing event.

Laugh Fest:
March 5-9, 2025

Launched in 2011, this 10-day event brings together a diverse audience and performers who share at least one common joy, laughter. LaughFest has provided the community with opportunities to see up and coming headliners before they made it big such as Nate Bargatze, Amy Schumer, Tiffany Haddish and more! With an average annual attendance of 50,000 attendees, children and adults alike will find humor for all ages at this festival.

Lowell Christmas Festivities
Saturday, December 7, 2024

Head over to Lowell on December 2 for their annual Christmas festivities. Enjoy all-day holiday shopping, a fine arts and craft show, a live nativity, and a craft workshop. Make sure to bring your kids to take part in the library book sale, pancake supper, and board the showboat for visits and photos with Santa. Winterfest Grand Haven
JANUARY 23 – 26, 2025

For over 30 years families have enjoyed this loved winter tradition. This annual event takes place January 25 through 28 and boasts a wide variety of events. Some of these include bonfire bash, cardboard sled races, family dog pull, kids day, and more.

Muskegon Museum of Art’s Festival of Trees
Nov 27 2024 – Jan 05 2025

The Festival of Trees is back AND it will be extended through the holiday season!

Take a trip down memory lane with nostalgic holiday collections at the Muskegon Museum of Art this holiday season. From vintage ornaments and trains to holiday Barbies and a forest of bottle brush trees, this exhibition is sure to spark your holiday joy! Take note: that the Muskegon Museum of Art will be closed November 28, December 24, 25, 31, and January 1 in observance of the holidays.

Don’t forget to stop in at the Muskegon Museum of Art while you are in town to see some festive holiday decorations and catch live performances throughout the galleries. During the festival, the Museum of Art will also be holding the events below:

“Kerstmarkt” is Dutch for “Christmas market” and that is just what guests can expect to experience. In beautiful Holland Michigan, this festival has almost doubled in size since its origination. Occurring for three weekends between Thanksgiving and Christmas, attendees have plenty of opportunities to gather and shop from local artisans and specialty shops. Parade of Lights

Santa Claus arrives in Downtown Holland during the annual Parade of Lights, escorted by over 80 floats, commercial vehicles, walkers, and marching bands…all decked out from top to bottom in thousands of sparkling lights! Come see why this brightly lit holiday procession on Tuesday, December 3 is a holiday tradition for the entire community! The Parade of Lights will begin at the corner of 8th Street and Columbia Avenue at 6:30 pm sharp and proceed west down 8th Street until it reaches the Holland Civic Center Place at 150 West 8th Street, home of the Holiday Kerstmarkt!

Sinterklaas Shuffle

Fri & Sat, December 6 & 7, 2024 |  Times Vary

Join Sinterklaas and his friends for a wonderful trip to fun and faraway places without leaving downtown Holland! Sinterklaas will welcome families downtown to celebrate this Dutch holiday tradition. Guests will also be able to visit with skiers in Dutch costumes, the Community Police Team from the Holland Police Department, and even Sinterklaas’ beautiful white horse, Ozosnel. Start this adventure at the Tulip Time office to pick up lanterns and passports before stamping your passport at Sinterklaas’s Lodge, Polar Place, Sperry Slopes, Carolyn’s Candy Land, and Ozosnel’s Stable. Small gifts will be given to passport holders at each station.

Coopersville Santa Train

Hop aboard a holiday-decorated, vintage locomotive for a 90-minute round-trip ride from Coopersville to Marne and back.  While aboard the train, Santa will visit with each family while the children are able to tell him what they are wishing for this holiday season. The experience also features a storytelling princess that will read Christmas-themed books to the children in each train car.

Have little ones? No worries, the train has bathrooms and heat to keep you toasty regardless of how cold it is outside. The Santa train runs on Saturdays and Sundays Nov. 30 through Dec. 22.  Book your tickets early as they tend to sell out fast. Spring Lake Sparkle Photos with Santa Claus

Head to the lakeshore and see Santa in downtown Spring Lake as part of the Spring Lake Sparkle. The Sparkle runs November 23 through January 1, but exact Santa dates have not yet been announced. While downtown in Spring Lake be sure to check out everything else the Spring Lake Sparkle has to offer as well as the local businesses that are staying open late on Fridays and Saturdays. This is a great spot to visit Santa in West Michigan!

From the website: “Visit Spring Lake from November 23, 2024, to January 1, 2025, to see the town sparkle with Christmas lights and displays. Epicurean Village will be ground zero for the duration of Sparkle – There you will find a community Christmas tree, Santa’s house with operating hours, a fireplace, and seating. This is part of the social district! Grab your favorite cocktail or cocoa and cozy up with us into the New Year.”

Santa Visits on the Lowell Showboat VI

Santa is back in Lowell on the Lowell Showboat VI! The man in red arrives on Saturday, December 7, and will be visiting with children on the showboat from 2 to 4 p.m. Make sure to stick around for the annual nighttime Santa parade starting at 6 p.m. Santa will also be at the showboat on Wednesdays from 4:30 to 7 p.m. until Dec. 18 and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. until Dec. 21. All visits include a free online photo, and a $2 donation is recommended. Cookies and hot cocoa are also provided free of charge! Lines are often long and there may be an outside line so be sure to dress accordingly.

If you are looking for more of an experience, check out “A Nite of Christmas Cheer” on Friday, December 13 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. for visits with Santa, hot cocoa, cookies, hot dogs, chestnuts, warming fires, and carriage rides.

Santa visit at Showboat

Santa & Mrs. Claus at Fredrick Meijer Gardens

Fredrick Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park is a great place to see Santa in Grand Rapids.  Santa and Mrs. Claus will be in a tropical conservatory on Tuesday evenings December 3, 10 & 17 from 5-8pm. A visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus is included when you purchase a general admission ticket to the gardens. For more information on hours and admission costs check out their website.  All ticket sales are done on-site. 

Rockford Santa Parade

Santa arrives in Rockford on December 7 at the Santa Parade! From at 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Santa will be visiting with children immediately after the parade in the Rotary Pavillion. Carriage rides will also be available from the pavilion through downtown Rockford. This Rockford event is a great place to see Santa in West Michigan! Click here for more details on the event.

Sparta Santa Visits

Starting December 7 th, Santa and Mrs. Clause will be in Mrs. Clauses’ bakery in Sparta at the Sparta Chamber Office. Santa’s schedule varies and can be found here. Be sure to take your own camera to capture that special moment with Santa as a photographer is not provided. If you are looking to add a little more fun to the day, there are a few dates that will offer a holiday hay ride as well!

The Santa Cabin at Bosch’s Countryview Nursery in Allendale

What’s better than picking out your live Christmas tree with the whole family? Visiting Santa while you’re at it of course! New to Bosch’s Countryview Nursery last year is their Santa Cabin experience. Starting November 23, on limited dates, grab a cup of hot cocoa as you board your horse/tractor-pulled wagon through the woods out to the Santa cabin where you will get to visit with Santa. You will also get a packet of S’mores to roast on the fire outside of the cabin. How cool is that? The price is $10 per person but hurry the last date for the season is Dec 21! This is a can’t miss spot to see Santa in West Michigan!

If you’re up in the Muskegon area, Lewis Adventure Farm and Zoo is a day trip you won’t want to miss. Open daily during the fall, you can stop into U-Pick apples to enjoy over 46 attractions and see over 100 animals. Burn off some energy on the Hillbilly Giant Slide, low ropes and activity course, pedal carts, and more. Recharge with some delicious donuts and sweets at the bakery, or grab lunch at the Farm Market Kitchen. Ed Dunneback and Girls Farm

With 100 years of history, this Alpine Township farm started in 1922 and consisted of 170 acres. The farm was active from its start, hosting barn dances, weddings, tours, and hayrides through the 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s. The barn now hosts a fresh produce market, gift shop, bakery, kitchen, and taproom. Whether you’re looking for U-Pick apples or strawberries, test your skills and trivia knowledge in their 8-acre trivia-based corn maze, take the whole family on a hayride, or enjoy some live music while sipping on a beverage from the taproom, you can do it all at Ed Dunneback and Girls farm. ArtPrize

What is one festival that is loved by not only locals but by those all over? Adults and children alike are wowed as they wander the art-filled streets of Grand Rapids every other fall at ArtPrize. Since 2009, over a quarter-million people have descended on the streets of Grand Rapids to enjoy the city-wide art exhibit. Over 150 venues around the city join museums and galleries in hosting hundreds of artists’ work. With the event offering 18 days to take part in the beauty and events, you can make sure to enjoy as much as you’d like. Red Flannel Festival

Pull out your red flannel and head out to one of the longest-running festivals in Michigan. Always occurring on the first Saturday in October, this festival takes place in Cedar Springs, Michigan, and celebrates over 80 years of being a staple event for locals and surrounding cities. Head down to downtown Cedar Springs during this two-weekend festival and enjoy an array of events, an Arts and Crafts Show, Parade, Car Show, Lumberjack Supper, and more! Don’t show up without your red or you’ll wind up in “jail” and have to pay $1 to get yourself out. Fallasburg Art Festival

This two-day, free event takes place in the beautiful Fallasburg Park in Lowell, Michigan. The yearly event takes place in September and hosts 100 fine art and craft artist booths. African American Arts & Music Festival

Take a historical journey through musical expression in downtown Grand Rapids at the African American Arts and Music Festival. Michigan Apple Fest

Muskegon Fall Festival

Head on over to the Muskegon County Fairgrounds for their Fall Festival each year in early October. Daily activities will include arts and crafts, food vendors, outside games, a costume contest, and much more. Make sure to peruse around the flea market and ride some of the fun carnival rides. With Lowell’s wide array of dining options, everyone is bound to find exactly what they’re craving. Flat River Grill, a neighborhood restaurant that’s part of the Gilmore Group, highlights wood-fired entrées, such as the Rustic Grilled Cheese, Flat River Burger, or one of their many wood-fired pizza options. Enjoy your meal in one of the two unique dining spaces or on the four-season patio nestled along the Flat River and the famous Lowell Showboat. Lowell Museum

The city of Lowell has encapsulated its rich history throughout its community, but for those wanting to learn a bit more, a visit to the Lowell Museum will not disappoint. Founded in 1989, the museum is home to more than 15,000 photographs and artifacts that preserve the city’s rich history. Red Barn

One of the local’s favorite spots is the Red Barn. Bring your whole family out to enjoy this family-owned and operated business. During your visit, make sure to eat at the café/ice cream shop, enjoying a cold, crisp Painted Turtle Hard Cider, pick up some locally grown produce at the Farm Store, and let the little ones run around and admire the animals at the Barnyard.

Parks and Trails

Experience the beauty of nature while hiking on Lowell’s many nature trails. Enjoy the breathtaking riverfront trails at Fallasburg Park and pack a picnic lunch to munch on while taking in all the historic character the park has to offer. Make sure to check out the covered bridge and disc golf course.

Also make time for the North Country Trail, which is the longest in the National Trail Systems. It stretches 4,700 miles and is perfect for hiking a few miles during the day or embarking on an overnight backpacking trip. With the headquarters for the whole trail being located in Lowell, Michigan, there are many ways for locals to get involved and for travelers to learn more about the trail.

Showboat Concerts:

Golf:

Perfect your golf game at the beautiful, 18-hole Arrowhead Golf Course. Test your skills while playing through rolling, wooded terrain on their 6,188-yard course and step up to the challenge of holes 11 and 18—known for being the two most difficult holes in Michigan. Farmer’s Market:

Also on Thursdays, you can visit the Lowell Area Farmer’s Market. The Farmer’s Market is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parking lot of Impact Church, across from Meijer. Riverwalk Festival

You can enjoy various events, including street entertainers, Flea on the Flat River, check-out vintage cars during the Riverwalk Cruise-In Classic, and the Ducky Derby.
