Grand Rapids Michigan is rich in many things, one such thing being history. For those who love history, the city, or both, there are plenty of opportunities to learn about who and what made Grand Rapids the city it is today, as well as important history throughout the world. Each Grand Rapids museum offers a unique way to learn and many have even incorporated hands-on learning activities within the exhibits to make learning fun for the whole family.

Grand Rapids Public Museum

Beginning in 1868 at Central High school, this museum grew to its own home in 1903 at the Howlett house. Following even more growth, expansion needs, and one other building it called home, the current facility opened in 1994. Located right on the Grand River it now contains three floors of exhibits, the Roger B. Chaffee Planetarium, Cook Carousel Pavilion, Meijer Theater, a cafe, and a gift shop.

The museum houses some staple exhibits, such as Streets of Old Grand Rapids, West Michigan Habitats, and Grand Fish Grand River, which can be seen year-round. It also brings in new and exciting, limited-time exhibits, which have included, TOYS!, Historic Grand Rapids Build from LEGO Bricks, Design Zone, and many more. Keep an eye out for the upcoming exhibits and plan your trip on their website. Make sure to check out their calendar of events to see what fun family events you can take part in right in the Museum.

Grand Rapids Art Museum

With a mission of “Connecting people through art, creativity, and design” the Grand Rapids Art Museum believes art is essential for everyone. Young and old, all races, genders, and cultures can be inspired and connect with each other through art. With a variety of exhibitions, events, and educational programming all audiences are sure to find something they enjoy. Beginning in 1910 with a constitution adopted that established the Art Association of Grand Rapids, this first important step turned into the Grand Rapids Art Museum. Enjoy the works of many different artists with your appreciation beginning as you walk up to the building which was designed by London-based Munkenbeck+Marshall Architects and Kulapat Yantrasast.

Grand Rapids Children’s Museum

Debuting in 1993 as a museum “without walls” the museum began its journey in the Woodland Mall. Featuring only 2 exhibits over 30,000 children were exposed to this fun, hands-on, exploration, and learning environment. Due to the excitement over these exhibits, the current location on Sheldon Ave. in downtown Grand Rapids opened in the summer of 1997 and has since seen more than 3 million guests. Offering fun and hands-on exhibits for children of all ages, check out the classics, such as The Fish Tank, Mirrors, and Lego tables.

Another favorite is the Bubbles exhibit which allows guests to see what the world looks like from inside a giant bubble. Or spend some time in Little GR, learning to count money in the TCF bank, make your own pizza in Buddy’s Pizza, shop in Meijer, and much more. There is so much to do at the Children’s Museum, you are sure to enjoy a fun-filled day with your family.

$9 for ages 1-64, with children under 1 getting in for free.

The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum

Enjoy in-person exhibits as well as, several online exhibits that you can enjoy right from the comfort of your own home. Plan your visit today and enjoy many changing temporary exhibits and at the core of the Museum, the permanent exhibit which highlights President and Mrs. Ford’s lives. Having opened in 1981, this museum is part of the Presidential libraries system of the National Archives and Records Administration. Grand Rapids African American Museum

The Grand Rapids African American Museum’s (GRAAMA) mission is “collecting and retelling the rich, colorful stories which compose the historic African American tapestry of living in Grand Rapids”. Getting its start in 2014 with a grant from the Michigan Humanities Council, the project initiated the recording of oral histories from African Americans right here in Grand Rapids and throughout West Michigan. This was just the beginning as the project grew and led to the opening of the current 2,100 square foot location open today. With the planning stages underway, the GRAAMA is looking to expand into its new 13,000+ square foot location in downtown Grand Rapids.

Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park

After 13 years of planning and fundraising, the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park opened in 1995. Offering a variety of indoor and outdoor exhibits your day will be packed with beauty, fun, education, and inspiration. Some of the highlighted exhibits include the Japanese Garden, the Children’s Garden, Michigan’s farm garden the Amphitheater, and a seasonal favorite, the Butterfly exhibit. Also, enjoy their summer concert series and Tuesday Evening Music Club at the Amphitheater. Hop on their website and plan your visit today. You may need a couple of days to experience all the beauty the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park has to offer.

Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts

Part of Kendall College of Art and Design, the UICA supports and exhibits contemporary art made by artists both local and from all over the world. The exhibits are free to the public.

What to do at UICA

The galleries at the UICA have art pieces of all sizes and inventiveness. If you want to see the art from a truly unique perspective, behind-the-scenes tours are available.

Outside of the walls of the UICA building, you can find its Exit Space Project locations, where local street artists add more color to downtown Grand Rapids by painting murals on utility boxes, buildings, and parking ramps around the city.

The UICA is currently reopening at the Woodbridge N. Ferris Building, on the campus of Kendall College of Art and Design. We will update you when more information is available.

Wolfgang’s Restaurant

A family-owned restaurant in East Town, Wolfgang’s is one of the best breakfast restaurants in Grand Rapids and has been operating for over 40 years. Wolfgang’s menu has so many options you truly need to check it out yourself. They truly have something for everyone and include multiple different options. Offerings include benedicts, skillets, omelets, quesadillas, classic breakfasts, burritos, French toast, waffles, and steel-cut oats. The only question you will have is what to eat next!

Brown Butter Creperie and Café

Located in the historic Windmill building in Eastown, Brown butter crêpes offers a taste of France with a wide selection of both sweet and savory crêpes as well as Belgian waffles. Butchers Union

Known for its fine meats and extensive whiskey list, Butchers Union is one of the most popular restaurants on Bridge Street and is a top choice for great food in Grand Rapids. Guests will be greeted with a cozy atmosphere complete with leather tufted booths. Be sure to try one of the Butcher’s Cut’s to get your choice of an 8oz Hanger, 14oz Ribeye, or 6oz Wagyu Tenderloin served with Japanese white sweet potato, feta, honey, cultured butter, baby kale, and dill.

If you are a Whiskey Connoisseur, then Butcher’s Union is where you want to be. The restaurant offers over 200 types of whiskey! Grab a drink of one of your favorites or go on a whiskey-tasting journey with one of the whiskey flights. Whiskey flights change weekly, so be sure to stop in for a new variety each week. New Holland Brewing Co – The Knickerbocker

New Holland Brewing Co is known as Michigan’s first brewery and distillery. The Knickerbocker is New Holland Brewing’s restaurant on Bridge Street and offers a menu with a taste of many different world traditions that they have presented with a new fresh perspective. The menu truly has something for everybody with vegetarian and gluten-free options. Guests rave about the Exotic Mushrooms & Goat Cheese Pizza, topped with local mushrooms, spinach, herb oil, goat cheese, and mozzarella – offered on either a hand-tossed or gluten-free crust! The Knickerbocker also has a full drink menu, including cocktails with infused New Holland’s own Knickerbocker Gin. Take advantage of the beer flight to try some of the different home-brewed beers they have to offer. Make sure to visit the retail store before you head out to take home some swag and drinks to go.

Ando Sushi

Ando Sushi is your go-to Grand Rapids restaurant for sushi on Bridge Street. The Asian-themed restaurant offers many different sushi rolls to choose from on its menu. You will find exciting new signature sushi rolls like the Crouching Tiger and The Fresh Prince rolls, as well as some of the classics like the Cali and Spicy Tuna rolls. The Mitten Brewing

The first stop on this West Michigan brewery trail is The Mitten Brewing co.! Founded in 2012 by two lifelong friends, this vintage baseball-themed brewery and pizzeria is a must-stop on your brewery road trip. Kick off your trip with this unique, history-filled restaurant. Built-in one of Grand Rapids’ Victorian masterpieces, the old Engine House No. 9 is now home to this fantastic business. Becoming the first working brewery in the West Side of Grand Rapids since Prohibition their history and offerings are sure to be unlike any other.

Atwater Brewing

Having its start in Detroit Michigan in 1997, Atwater in Grand Rapids opened in 2016 and is located downtown. This German-style brewhouse is the creator of Dirty Blonde and Vanilla Java Porter, two front runners on the craft beer market. With the slogan being, “We drink all we can and sell the rest” the love for this craft clearly begins in-house and expands to communities all around. This is a must-visit on your brewery road trip.

New Holland Brewing- The Knickerbocker

Placed at the gateway of Grand Rapids Michigan’s Westside, this brewery offers drink and food menus that will give you a taste of many other worlds. With a full drink menu offering favorites such as Dragon’s Milk, The Poet, Golden Sails, and many more beers brewed in-house, there is something for every beer connoisseur. If you’re looking for cocktails, wine, and cider, they have many options in those categories, so everyone is sure to find exactly what they want. With a range of food options on the menu, this stop on the tour is a great place to grab a snack or have a delicious meal along with your drinks.

Founders

The Co-Founders of this brewery brewed their first batches in 1997. One year later, their taproom opened for business with the co-founders being the only bartenders. After struggling financially and pouring their blood, sweat, and tears into the business for years, their business turned around with the creation of Dirty Bastard and the debut of bourbon barrel-aged KBS draft. Becoming front runners of the bourbon barrel-aged scene, they grew to their first expansion in 2005. They officially moved to their current location in 2007 and have been growing and serving the community since. In that time they have created a few other front-runner beers, which are staples on their menu and have grown a huge distribution career as well.

Coopersville:

Coopersville Brewery Company

With its slogan being “Smack-dab in the middle of everywhere” this is a natural middle point between Grand Rapids and the lakeshore and is a great middle spot for our tour. Enjoy locally sourced products with a farm-to-table approach at this eclectic, down-to-earth brewery. Offering a variety of beers from pilsners to stout to ales, everyone is sure to find a brew that quenches their thirst. Fill your belly with delicious food from One-Eyed Pete’s kitchen, the breweries sister business. Inspired by southern BBQ the locally sourced food will pair excellently with whatever beer you try.

Allendale:

Trail Pointe Brewing

Beginning in brew kettles, this brewery has expanded into what it is today. Owned by beer lovers who are constantly honing their craft by being a part of the Muskegon Ottawa Brewers club (MOB) this brewery takes pride in the beers it serves. Inspired by a desire to connect with the community even their name pays homage to the history of the city it calls home. Enjoy a beer or cider (or both) while visiting. Also, make sure to try their crisp, bubbly seltzer with light pear and white grape twist. A perfect mid-point stop on this West Michigan Brewery trail!

Grand Haven:

Grand Armory Brewing

Serving the Grand Haven area since 2015 in a historic, 113-year-old building, the Grand Armory Brewing is home to 20 taps and a variety of ales, ciders, and wine. This brewery is unique in that it opens early in the morning with coffee, scones, and a relaxed atmosphere and morphs into a brewery throughout the day. With food, music, and drinks it is a welcoming environment for all ages and a must-visit on your tour to the lakeshore.

Burzurk Brewing Co.

This Caribbean/ Retro style taproom has a Burzurk vibe and fantastic beer options. With 12 taps they offer beers in all styles, ciders, and a unique flavor your own hard seltzer option. Their offerings vary from Mexican/Czech lagers, porters, stouts, IPA’s, and more. Head over to their taproom to sample their beers and check out their awesome merchandise.

Odd Side Ales

With their story beginning in 2010, they began as a micro-brewery and quickly outgrew their pub’s brewing capacity due to high demand for products. After expanding three times, they currently run their operations out of their own 44,000 sq ft facility. They maintain a year-round core group of craft beers while also bringing in new seasonal menu items. They now distribute to 8 states other than Michigan, but seeing their facility in person is unbeatable. Head over to their website to see their different beers on tap. They offer dark beers, light beers, hoppy beers, specialty beers, and sours. Try a sample of each to find your favorite category. Another great stop on this West Michigan brewery trail!

Long Road Distillers Grand Haven

Another stop that is a must-visit takes a break from beers and offers high-quality, masterfully crafted spirits. The spirits are distilled in-house and mixed with the best ingredients to enhance the delicious liquor. Running their business with the mindset “take no shortcuts” they have taken the time to use honest ingredients, crafting every batch from start to finish, and taking the road that many seem to avoid. Cascade Peace Park

Cascade Peace Park is the best hiking trail to head to if you’re unsure just how much hiking you want to get in that day. The park has eight different intersecting loops, and you can decide how many loops hike as you go depending on how you’re feeling.

The loops are easy to moderate, with the main loop being just 1.6 miles. However, doing all of the offshooting loops can make for a 5-mile hike. The trail takes you through wooded hills, wetlands, and wildflower meadows. It’s a beautiful hike near Ada, Michigan, just across from the Grand River.

Provin Trails

Provin Trails Park lets you get out of the city and right into nature with just a 15-minute drive from downtown Grand Rapids. Located next to Robinette’s Apple Haus & Winery, this natural undeveloped park is made up of interconnected hiking trail loops that meander through dense pine forest. There are public restrooms and in the winter the trails are open to cross country skiing.

North Country Trail – Lowell to Fallasburg

The 6-mile section of the North Country Trail between Lowell and Fallasburg Park is beautiful in any season, with some more difficult hill sections and wetter areas as you get closer to the park. It can be a great 6-mile hike if you leave a vehicle in Fallasburg or a longer 12-mile out-and-back hike if you’re looking to make a day of it.

About a mile of the hike is along a gravel road skirting around a lake. Fallasburg Park is the perfect place to stop for a rest and watch the ducks or geese on the river before heading back to Lowell.

Lepard Nature Preserve

Lepard Nature Preserve just off M-6 and M-37 in Caledonia packs a lot into a short 0.8-mile loop. The wooded trail is perfect for families or those looking for a quick walk.

The trailhead is located at the end of the Spirit of Life Church parking lot, on the south side of 76th Street. It begins with a wooden bridge with views of the small valley, then connects to the loop. Along the trail are signs explaining different elements of the nature preserve, including the wildlife and different kinds of vegetation you’ll find.

A portion of the trail runs along a creek and can get muddy depending on the time of year.

Seidman Park

This Ada hiking trail is a network of three interconnected trail loops that wind through wooded hills, around ponds, and through wetlands. The trail is well-worn and easy to navigate in all seasons. Each loop is about a mile long, and the different routes let you adjust how long of a hike to take. There are two different parking lots, with the south lot connecting to the Paved Ada Township Trail.

Millennium Park

The large and popular Millennium Park in Walker boasts the Fred Meijer Millennium Trail Network, a hiking holy grail with over 18 miles of trails. The trails are mostly paved, but there are plenty that has natural-surfaced trails for a more traditional hike. This is one of the best hiking areas in Grand Rapids

The trails run along the Grand River and around the many lakes and recreational areas of Millennium Park. A trailhead on the northeast of the park is a great place to start, but most of the trails are accessible from one of Millennium Park’s many parking areas.

If you’re looking for some easier trails to explore, Millennium Park has you covered! Don’t let its popularity scare you away – with so many miles of trails, you can still enjoy the great outdoors without rubbing elbows with other hikers.

Prairie Wolf Park

Prairie Wolf Park is another great Grand Rapids hiking park with loops that are flat and paved and others that are hilly, wooded, and natural. Many of the trails overlook meadows and go through wooded areas. The popular route through the interconnected trails is about 1.5 miles long. Children will love the large wolf statue near the start of the trails as well as the boardwalk crossing a pond that is often full of turtles and frogs in the spring and summer.

Aman Park

This West Grand Rapids park is only seven miles from downtown, but once you hit the trails you’ll feel like you’ve completely left the city behind. It has six interconnected trail loops ranging from a mile to 1.5 miles that meander along Sand Creek and through wooded bluffs. Aman Park is a beautiful fall Grand Rapids hike, with the trees dropping their leaves in the creek and carrying them downstream at peak color.

Being so close to the creek Aman Park can be buggy in the summer, so don’t forget the bug spray.

Grand Ravines

One of the best fall hikes around Grand Rapids, Grand Ravines lives up to its name. Paved trails wind around glacier-formed ravines, and natural trails cut through them. There are plenty of Insta-worthy overlooks with views of the Grand River and a unique pedestrian suspension bridge.

Grand Ravines is also a terrific trail to bring your leashed dog on. Near the south parking lot is an enclosed dog park, and a dog wash station to use after a nice hike with your pup.
