Bass River Recreation Area: 

If you enjoy outdoor activities, head to Bass River Recreation Area for hiking, picnicking, and fishing. The park has beautiful trails and access to the Grand River. For more information about trails and seasonal activities, click here.

Bass River Open space

This nature preserve is perfect for some time by the water, listening to the birds and being one with nature. Hunting is allowed within the DNR guidelines and within season. Pets are also allowed, so be mindful of that when bringing your leased pets to this park! Access the map before going here. 

Visit Local Eateries: 

Allendale has a selection of local restaurants , coffee shops and other dining options. Explore the Allendale food scene and try out some of the local flavors! You could even grab a coffee from one of these places before heading to one or all of the amazing art galleries.

Tea Time Cafe 

The Tea Time cafe is one local cafe you’ll have to check out. They feature the unique combo of bubble tea, poke bowls, ramen and more authentic asian cuisine! Its cozy atmosphere is perfect for a relaxing break from shopping or maybe even an afternoon of reading and sipping delicious drinks paired with equally delicious food.

Get some craft beer and stuffed burgers at this unique eating destination only found in Allendale! One thing the customer reviews seem to RAVE about are their fried pickles and amazing staff. Definitely make this a stop if you’re in Allendale for lunch or dinner! 

El Aztecas

“El Aztecas represents the hard working immigrants in the United States that put everything they had into fulfilling a dream.” If you’re looking for Authentic Mexican cuisine in Allendale, this is the spot for you! The customers especially compliment their Horchata as “the best in the area!!” With yummy drinks and delicious food, you’ll want to add this to your list. 

Shopping in Allendale

While you could certainly scoot over to the nearby Grandview shopping center, if you’d like to stay in the area we’ve found a couple wonderful shoppes for you to explore in Allendale! Read on to see all the cute places we found. 

Grounded in Nature

This shoppe features bohemian style clothing, crystal jewelry and everything a bohemian soul could desire! If you love spiritually or hippie inspired clothing, decor, jewelry and even more, you’ll have to visit this store!

Ripple Effect Resale

This stores mission is simple and clear: shop, save, and make an impact.Who wouldn’t want to save money WHILE doing good for the world? Their hours are MON-THURS 10AM-6pm and FRI/SAT 10AM-5PM. They have 5 different programs that their sales give back to (including a food pantry, community gardens and more), which you can check out here. ALong with their good deeds, they also just have an amazing selection of clothes, furniture and other resale items! Be a part of the Ripple Effect by taking a shopping trip at this Allendale destination!

Family Fare Fresh Supermarket

Buy local at this super fresh supermarket! This is a great place to shop at if you plan on making your own cuisine during your visit in Allendale. They even do the shopping for you and can deliver it to your car for pick up or delivery is available in some areas to your home or otherwise local areas. 

Brians Books

This hidden gem doesn’t have a website, but they sure have a lot of books! It took some digging to find a good bookstore in Allendale, but I’m so glad we found this one! Customers say that they give back more money for used books than most stores, especially for student textbooks. They also feature some music items alongside the books. Make sure to grab a coffee or tea and then browse around this Allendale book shoppe. 

Seasonal Events: 

Attend seasonal events and festivals. Whether it’s a summer fair, fall festival, or winter celebration, there may be local events that offer a fun and community-oriented experience. There is also a variety of events that give back to the community. You can check the full event calendar here!

While Allendale itself may be relatively small, it’s got plenty to do and experience for travelers! The proximity to Grand Rapids also provides additional options for entertainment, dining, and cultural experiences.

Grand Rapids:

The Mitten Brewing

The first stop on this West Michigan brewery trail is The Mitten Brewing co.! Founded in 2012 by two lifelong friends, this vintage baseball-themed brewery and pizzeria is a must-stop on your brewery road trip. Kick off your trip with this unique, history-filled restaurant. Built-in one of Grand Rapids’ Victorian masterpieces, the old Engine House No. 9 is now home to this fantastic business. Becoming the first working brewery in the West Side of Grand Rapids since Prohibition their history and offerings are sure to be unlike any other.

Atwater Brewing

Having its start in Detroit Michigan in 1997, Atwater in Grand Rapids opened in 2016 and is located downtown. This German-style brewhouse is the creator of Dirty Blonde and Vanilla Java Porter, two front runners on the craft beer market. With the slogan being, “We drink all we can and sell the rest” the love for this craft clearly begins in-house and expands to communities all around. This is a must-visit on your brewery road trip.

New Holland Brewing- The Knickerbocker

Placed at the gateway of Grand Rapids Michigan’s Westside, this brewery offers drink and food menus that will give you a taste of many other worlds. With a full drink menu offering favorites such as Dragon’s Milk, The Poet, Golden Sails, and many more beers brewed in-house, there is something for every beer connoisseur. If you’re looking for cocktails, wine, and cider, they have many options in those categories, so everyone is sure to find exactly what they want. With a range of food options on the menu, this stop on the tour is a great place to grab a snack or have a delicious meal along with your drinks.

Founders

The Co-Founders of this brewery brewed their first batches in 1997. One year later, their taproom opened for business with the co-founders being the only bartenders. After struggling financially and pouring their blood, sweat, and tears into the business for years, their business turned around with the creation of Dirty Bastard and the debut of bourbon barrel-aged KBS draft. Becoming front runners of the bourbon barrel-aged scene, they grew to their first expansion in 2005. They officially moved to their current location in 2007 and have been growing and serving the community since. In that time they have created a few other front-runner beers, which are staples on their menu and have grown a huge distribution career as well.

Coopersville:

Coopersville Brewery Company

With its slogan being “Smack-dab in the middle of everywhere” this is a natural middle point between Grand Rapids and the lakeshore and is a great middle spot for our tour. Enjoy locally sourced products with a farm-to-table approach at this eclectic, down-to-earth brewery. Offering a variety of beers from pilsners to stout to ales, everyone is sure to find a brew that quenches their thirst. Fill your belly with delicious food from One-Eyed Pete’s kitchen, the breweries sister business. Inspired by southern BBQ the locally sourced food will pair excellently with whatever beer you try.

Allendale:

Trail Pointe Brewing

Beginning in brew kettles, this brewery has expanded into what it is today. Owned by beer lovers who are constantly honing their craft by being a part of the Muskegon Ottawa Brewers club (MOB) this brewery takes pride in the beers it serves. Inspired by a desire to connect with the community even their name pays homage to the history of the city it calls home. Enjoy a beer or cider (or both) while visiting. Also, make sure to try their crisp, bubbly seltzer with light pear and white grape twist. A perfect mid-point stop on this West Michigan Brewery trail!

Grand Haven:

Grand Armory Brewing

Serving the Grand Haven area since 2015 in a historic, 113-year-old building, the Grand Armory Brewing is home to 20 taps and a variety of ales, ciders, and wine. This brewery is unique in that it opens early in the morning with coffee, scones, and a relaxed atmosphere and morphs into a brewery throughout the day. With food, music, and drinks it is a welcoming environment for all ages and a must-visit on your tour to the lakeshore.

Burzurk Brewing Co.

This Caribbean/ Retro style taproom has a Burzurk vibe and fantastic beer options. With 12 taps they offer beers in all styles, ciders, and a unique flavor your own hard seltzer option. Their offerings vary from Mexican/Czech lagers, porters, stouts, IPA’s, and more. Head over to their taproom to sample their beers and check out their awesome merchandise.

Odd Side Ales

With their story beginning in 2010, they began as a micro-brewery and quickly outgrew their pub’s brewing capacity due to high demand for products. After expanding three times, they currently run their operations out of their own 44,000 sq ft facility. They maintain a year-round core group of craft beers while also bringing in new seasonal menu items. They now distribute to 8 states other than Michigan, but seeing their facility in person is unbeatable. Head over to their website to see their different beers on tap. They offer dark beers, light beers, hoppy beers, specialty beers, and sours. Try a sample of each to find your favorite category. Another great stop on this West Michigan brewery trail!

Long Road Distillers Grand Haven

Another stop that is a must-visit takes a break from beers and offers high-quality, masterfully crafted spirits. The spirits are distilled in-house and mixed with the best ingredients to enhance the delicious liquor. Running their business with the mindset “take no shortcuts” they have taken the time to use honest ingredients, crafting every batch from start to finish, and taking the road that many seem to avoid. Also, check out their event space for your future parties, catered with amazing quality food and drink.

Santa visits in west michigan

Coopersville Santa Train

Hop aboard a holiday-decorated, vintage locomotive for a 90-minute round-trip ride from Coopersville to Marne and back.  While aboard the train, Santa will visit with each family while the children are able to tell him what they are wishing for this holiday season. The experience also features a storytelling princess that will read Christmas-themed books to the children in each train car.

Have little ones? No worries, the train has bathrooms and heat to keep you toasty regardless of how cold it is outside. The Santa train runs on Saturdays and Sundays Nov. 30 through Dec. 22.  Book your tickets early as they tend to sell out fast. Spring Lake Sparkle Photos with Santa Claus

Head to the lakeshore and see Santa in downtown Spring Lake as part of the Spring Lake Sparkle. The Sparkle runs November 23 through January 1, but exact Santa dates have not yet been announced. While downtown in Spring Lake be sure to check out everything else the Spring Lake Sparkle has to offer as well as the local businesses that are staying open late on Fridays and Saturdays. This is a great spot to visit Santa in West Michigan!

From the website: “Visit Spring Lake from November 23, 2024, to January 1, 2025, to see the town sparkle with Christmas lights and displays. Epicurean Village will be ground zero for the duration of Sparkle – There you will find a community Christmas tree, Santa’s house with operating hours, a fireplace, and seating. This is part of the social district! Grab your favorite cocktail or cocoa and cozy up with us into the New Year.”

Santa Visits on the Lowell Showboat VI

Santa is back in Lowell on the Lowell Showboat VI! The man in red arrives on Saturday, December 7, and will be visiting with children on the showboat from 2 to 4 p.m. Make sure to stick around for the annual nighttime Santa parade starting at 6 p.m. Santa will also be at the showboat on Wednesdays from 4:30 to 7 p.m. until Dec. 18 and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. until Dec. 21. All visits include a free online photo, and a $2 donation is recommended. Cookies and hot cocoa are also provided free of charge! Lines are often long and there may be an outside line so be sure to dress accordingly.

If you are looking for more of an experience, check out “A Nite of Christmas Cheer” on Friday, December 13 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. for visits with Santa, hot cocoa, cookies, hot dogs, chestnuts, warming fires, and carriage rides.

Santa visit at Showboat

Santa & Mrs. Claus at Fredrick Meijer Gardens

Fredrick Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park is a great place to see Santa in Grand Rapids.  Santa and Mrs. Claus will be in a tropical conservatory on Tuesday evenings December 3, 10 & 17 from 5-8pm. A visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus is included when you purchase a general admission ticket to the gardens. For more information on hours and admission costs check out their website.  All ticket sales are done on-site. 

Rockford Santa Parade

Santa arrives in Rockford on December 7 at the Santa Parade! From at 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Santa will be visiting with children immediately after the parade in the Rotary Pavillion. Carriage rides will also be available from the pavilion through downtown Rockford. This Rockford event is a great place to see Santa in West Michigan! Click here for more details on the event.

Sparta Santa Visits

Starting December 7 th, Santa and Mrs. Clause will be in Mrs. Clauses’ bakery in Sparta at the Sparta Chamber Office. Santa’s schedule varies and can be found here. Be sure to take your own camera to capture that special moment with Santa as a photographer is not provided. If you are looking to add a little more fun to the day, there are a few dates that will offer a holiday hay ride as well!

The Santa Cabin at Bosch’s Countryview Nursery in Allendale

What’s better than picking out your live Christmas tree with the whole family? Visiting Santa while you’re at it of course! New to Bosch’s Countryview Nursery last year is their Santa Cabin experience. Starting November 23, on limited dates, grab a cup of hot cocoa as you board your horse/tractor-pulled wagon through the woods out to the Santa cabin where you will get to visit with Santa. You will also get a packet of S’mores to roast on the fire outside of the cabin. How cool is that? The price is $10 per person but hurry the last date for the season is Dec 21! This is a can’t miss spot to see Santa in West Michigan!

The fun starts now through Dec 24.  All reservations come with one free photo with Santa, but you are also able to buy more if you wish. Reservations are required and can be booked here. After you visit Santa, make sure to check out the freshwater aquarium while you are there!

Orchards:

Orchards are on the top of most people’s West Michigan fall activities to-do list due to the combination of exciting activities and beautiful fall colors. The orchards below provide fun for the whole family and are located right in West Michigan.

Located in Hudsonville, Michigan, this family-owned and operated business incorporates all of your favorite fall must-haves in one place. Enjoy hayrides, a pumpkin train ride, farm animals, outdoor play areas, and more in this beautiful old-fashioned farm setting. Fall activity hours are as follows, Monday through Thursday from noon to 7 p.m., Friday from noon to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Don’t forget to stop into the donut shop that opens at 7:30 a.m. to grab some of their amazing pumpkin donuts and apple cider. Lewis Adventure Farm and Zoo

If you’re up in the Muskegon area, Lewis Adventure Farm and Zoo is a day trip you won’t want to miss. Open daily during the fall, you can stop into U-Pick apples to enjoy over 46 attractions and see over 100 animals. Burn off some energy on the Hillbilly Giant Slide, low ropes and activity course, pedal carts, and more. Recharge with some delicious donuts and sweets at the bakery, or grab lunch at the Farm Market Kitchen. Crane’s Orchards

Set a day aside to explore Crane’s located in Fennville, Michigan. Spend a good part of your day in their 20-acre corn maze. Have you made it out of the maze in previous years? Don’t let that deter you. Crane’s creates a new design each year. Do you have what it takes to defeat this year’s challenge? Harvest Moon Acres

The quaint city of Gobles, Michigan, is home to Harvest Moon Acres. A corn maze and fun park provide family fun on the farm. Run around Cattle Castle, test your skills at Harvest Moon Saloon Shootout, get competitive with duck races, and more. Don’t forget to stop by and meet their farm animals and, of course, enjoy a tractor-driven hayride. Finish your day with concessions, and make sure you pick your perfect pumpkin for carving. Ed Dunneback and Girls Farm

With 100 years of history, this Alpine Township farm started in 1922 and consisted of 170 acres. The farm was active from its start, hosting barn dances, weddings, tours, and hayrides through the 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s. The barn now hosts a fresh produce market, gift shop, bakery, kitchen, and taproom. Whether you’re looking for U-Pick apples or strawberries, test your skills and trivia knowledge in their 8-acre trivia-based corn maze, take the whole family on a hayride, or enjoy some live music while sipping on a beverage from the taproom, you can do it all at Ed Dunneback and Girls farm. Looking for a fun indoor experience for those crummier days? Head over to Great Lakes Glow Golf. Compete on their indoor mini-golf course under black light in their unique themed experience. Blandford Nature Center

If you want to enjoy all of the beautiful fall colors that nature offers, make sure you make a trip to the Blandford Nature Center. With 264 acres of land and an abundance of wildlife to see, you’ll fall in love with what Blandford Nature Center has to offer. ArtPrize

What is one festival that is loved by not only locals but by those all over? Adults and children alike are wowed as they wander the art-filled streets of Grand Rapids every other fall at ArtPrize. Since 2009, over a quarter-million people have descended on the streets of Grand Rapids to enjoy the city-wide art exhibit. Over 150 venues around the city join museums and galleries in hosting hundreds of artists’ work. With the event offering 18 days to take part in the beauty and events, you can make sure to enjoy as much as you’d like. Red Flannel Festival

Pull out your red flannel and head out to one of the longest-running festivals in Michigan. Always occurring on the first Saturday in October, this festival takes place in Cedar Springs, Michigan, and celebrates over 80 years of being a staple event for locals and surrounding cities. Head down to downtown Cedar Springs during this two-weekend festival and enjoy an array of events, an Arts and Crafts Show, Parade, Car Show, Lumberjack Supper, and more! Don’t show up without your red or you’ll wind up in “jail” and have to pay $1 to get yourself out. Fallasburg Art Festival

This two-day, free event takes place in the beautiful Fallasburg Park in Lowell, Michigan. The yearly event takes place in September and hosts 100 fine art and craft artist booths. Live music, food booths, and children’s activities make this an event the whole family will enjoy. African American Arts & Music Festival

Take a historical journey through musical expression in downtown Grand Rapids at the African American Arts and Music Festival. This two-part concert event honors and celebrates many different African American contributions through visual and performing arts. With previous performers, including New City Kids, Jordan Hamilton, and more, the variety of entertainment and food is something you won’t want to miss. Michigan Apple Fest

Looking for an event with many vendors, food trucks, bounce houses, kids’ fall activities, and a petting zoo? Look no further than Michigan Apple Fest in Sparta, Michigan. Downtown Sparta hosts this festival annually and it’s one you won’t want to miss. Kick off the fall season with this two-day event that combines new and traditional festivities each year. Zeeland Pumpkinfest

International Beer, Wine, and Food Festival

Muskegon Fall Festival

Head on over to the Muskegon County Fairgrounds for their Fall Festival each year in early October. Daily activities will include arts and crafts, food vendors, outside games, a costume contest, and much more. Make sure to peruse around the flea market and ride some of the fun carnival rides.
