Extra Information

Best time to visit

The best time to visit the zoo is early in the morning or just before closing, as animals are more active and there are fewer visitors. School groups often visit the zoo on weekdays in the morning from March to May and in September. If you enjoy the energy and excitement of children, this is a great time to visit. They recommend that you allow yourself two to three hours to see most of the zoo. Even better, visit often and explore a different part of the zoo each time. To avoid large crowds, visit John Ball Zoo during off-peak times. Fall and winter are typically less crowded than summer and holidays. Weekdays, non-holidays, and early mornings are also generally less crowded.

Pin Grand Rapids Food Trucks

Los Pinches Taco Truck

Everyone knows that food truck tacos are the BEST tacos! This Grand Rapids eatery is no exception. You will find items on the menu like small and large quesadillas, traditional or american style tacos, and EVEN some delicious dessert items featuring Nutella and Strawberries. The google reviews and their stomach-grabbing menu both affirm – you NEED to visit this food truck and try one for yourself.

Lost Art Burger

Serving up delicious and unique patties in the Lost Art Brewhouse parking lot, you won’t want your tastebuds to miss out on this. January’s burger of the month is unique in that its, well, not a burger? The new SMASHBURGER CRUNCHWRAP features their famous Sobie Meats beef patty, grilled onions, American cheese, Nacho cheese, lettuce, tostada shell, house-made FRESH pico de gallo, and house-made cilantro lime sauce. On top of this, Lost Art also has a philanthropic side – as they just gave away free burgers for a year to one lucky customer for 2024! Personally, I find crunchwraps of all kinds to be therapeutic, so I WILL have to go to this delectable food truck that made our top ten spots.

Porkfat Slims

Will the real pork-slim please stand up? Just kidding – however, Porkfat Slims DOES have you covered with their classic but deliciously unique barbeque food. Their mission, according to them, is to raise the bar on what good barbeque is supposed to taste like. With a mission like that, how could they disappoint? Their menu features classic BBQ items like BLANK as well as specialty items like BLANK. Every fan of barbeque needs to try this food truck stop! One of our fave Grand Rapids food trucks in the area!

Frites Street

Are you a super-fan of potatoes in any form like we are? If so, Frites Street NEEDS to be on your food truck tour list this year, if not right, this very MOMENT. There are 15 or more different cooking, slicing and flavoring styles on this menu. In all our time at WW, we have truly never seen this many types of potatoes – this is what one might describe as ‘potato heaven’. You’ve probably never wanted a meal entirely made out of french fries – until now. You absolutely MUST go, and please bring us some, too.

Olly’s Donuts

Don’t think we forgot those of you with a sweet tooth – we have one here too! Olly’s Donuts are a great way to satisfy that craving – just wait until you see all the different toppings and flavors they have for all the donut dishes! Freshness is important to Olly’s, so these mini donuts are made and served fresh on site. Some toppings you could get include: maple bacon, salted caramel, smores, cookies & cream and more. Maybe this would be a good stop to take right after the potato stop of the tour. Either way, any day, you are absolutely not going to regret putting this delicious donut destination on your Grand Rapids food truck list this year.

Crepes by the Lake

If you’re looking for something sweet, but maybe a little more European-influenced – look no further than Crepes by the Lake. They create Parisian-inspired fresh, sweet, and savory crepes for consumers who love a variety of flavors and rich textures that melt in your mouth. They have a unique twist on the traditional crepe that will make any mouth water! A crepe would also go very nicely with any of the amazing coffee shops we’ve listed here before, so maybe grab coffee with a friend before heading over to indulge in this not-guilty pleasure.

The Corner Twist

Did you think we would forget such a classic as the food truck pretzel? Absolutely not! The Corner Twist should be the next place on your list if you don’t need a full meal, but maybe a nice warm and delicious pick-me-up while out on break from work or on a walk with a friend. The pretzels come in a variety of flavors and have both sweet and savory dips for you to choose from. You can visit their Facebook page for a calendar to see where they are each day, or you can contact them about renting their truck for catering!

The Wandering Cow – Wanda’s Frozen Yogurt & Desserts

While the menu mainly focuses on desserts, you can also get a whole delicious meal here! With classics like shredded chicken sandwiches, pulled pork, wings, and more, you can start with a meal before going to the dessert. The frozen yogurt menu has something for everyone, featuring locally made flavors and 20 different toppings to choose from. This food truck makes some public stops, but it is also really popular for weddings and other fun events. SO make sure to check them out and enjoy some frozen dessert treats! One of our favorite Grand Rapids food trucks!

BONUS SPECIALTY TRUCK:

You cannot live your life without trying this delicious chicken, rain or shine freezing or toasty, braving any weather will be worth it just to give this chicken a try. We wanted this list to be for Grand Rapids, but couldn’t pass up the opportunity to tell our readers about this particular speciality truck – and i think you can see why!

West Michigan Rivers Adventures

While the lakes of West Michigan bring visitors from all over, we shouldn’t overlook rivers and streams for their ability to bring out the best of what nature has to offer. Historically, they were the original highways throughout what was once untamed wilderness. Fortunately, some of this wilderness survives, and within the forests run the very waterways that once carried indigenous people who were the first on the land.

Now, rivers throughout West Michigan offer many recreational opportunities, from kayaking, canoeing, tubing, and other types of entertainment like bird watching, fishing, and even exploring native plants and animals. Here are a few of the most popular rivers that welcome us to partake of the beauty of nature.

The Grand River Heritage Water Trail

The Grand River represents a tremendous recreational resource that is available for use and enjoyment by many for peaceful paddling, the exploration of parks and other sites, learning about the river’s natural characteristics, and discovery of the rich human history of Ottawa County tied directly to the river.

The Grand River Heritage Water Trail is a 41-mile water trail that encompasses nine distinct routes along the Grand River in Ottawa County. The slow, meandering river averages about 3 miles per hour, making it an ideal river to explore and see many of the natural and cultural assets along its shoreline. Paddlers can access the water trail at 18 different access points along the trail.

The Grand River has six tributaries, which are Red Cedar River, Looking Glass River, Maple River, Flat River, Thornapple River, and Rogue River. The Grand River that flows through downtown Grand Rapids is a major focus of the aquatic adventure. You can launch your own watercraft from nine local public access sites, rent a canoe or kayak for a guided tour, even take a scenic paddlewheel riverboat cruise. Three close-by tributary rivers – Flat River, Rogue River and Thornapple River – offer additional boating opportunities.

Muskegon River Water Trail

The Muskegon River is a 216-mile-long river in the Lower Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan. From its source at Houghton Lake in Roscommon County, the river flows in a generally southwesterly direction to its mouth at Lake Michigan at the eponymous city of Muskegon. Wikipedia

The Muskegon River finds its source in the Houghton Lake area, in the north-central portion of Michigan’s lower peninsula.  It winds its way over 200 miles to empty into Muskegon Lake, which is connected to lake Michigan by a long channel. This river is a big tailwater and is most effectively fished from a drift boat or jet sled. When stealth and easy movement are a necessity, driftboats are your best bet. A jet sled, though, can get you to and from certain “hot spots” quickly and safely while also giving you more time to fly fish.  That being said, it has several good areas for walk-in anglers who want to wade fish in the river.  A fair amount of public land is in the first 6+ miles of river, below Croton hydroelectric dam, just east of Newaygo.

White River Water Trail

The White River is a 23.6-mile-long river located on the western side of the Lower Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan. Its source is the Oxford Swamp in Newaygo County. The rural town of Hesperia borders the river. Wikipedia

Thornapple River

This 88-mile-long tributary of the Grand River is a popular fishing, boating and tubing destination. Fishing access is plentiful and watercraft rentals are available from several businesses along the river route. GR Paddling offers guided tours ranging in length from three to 10 miles. A 125-foot-long wooden pedestrian bridge spans the Thornapple in Ada, 10 miles east of Grand Rapids.

Rogue River Water Trail

The White River is a 23.6-mile-long river located on the western side of the Lower Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan. Its source is the Oxford Swamp in Newaygo County. The rural town of Hesperia borders the river. Wikipedia

This 48-mile long tributary of the Grand River runs through the town of Rockford and is a popular destination for trout fishing and scenic cruises.

Flat River Water Trail

The Flat river is a warm water fishery that empties into the Grand River in the town of Lowell, Michigan.   It’s a short 15 minute drive east of Grand Rapids to reach this small town and quality Smallmouth Bass fishery just off I-96.

This Grand River tributary flows peacefully through the city of Lowell, where the Flat River Grill offers patio views of the water and the historic Lowell Showboat. The Flat has a reputation as an excellent smallmouth bass stream and different stretches are ideal for float-type fishing and wading. Much of the river is canoeable, especially in the spring and summer.
