Festivals

Festivals celebrating the season abound throughout the region- whether a small-town celebrating the harvest and unique character of the place, or a larger event in the city of Muskegon, there’s always a reason to get out and enjoy! A concise and updated list of events can be found at VisitMuskegon’s website– everything from haunted places to gorgeous views of the autumn foliage can be found here!

Autumn Colors

The colors of Autumn are breathtaking, and it doesn’t matter how you see them- from the warmth of your vehicle to being able to jump in a pile of leaves on a hike, you can enjoy any way you desire.

  • Enjoy a trail! Muskegon State Park and PJ Hoffmaster State Park have numerous trails to hike and bike, and they also provide picnic areas and recreation opportunities. Other county parks, like Muskegon Lakeshore Trail and Musketawa Trail in Fruitport Township, offer miles of beautiful scenery.
  • Wanting a horseback ride? Check out Double JJ Ranch’s fall horseback color tours.
  • Riding a train through the countryside is another memorable experience- The Coopersville and Marne Railway, located just outside the eastern boundary of Muskegon County, runs their pumpkin train throughout the fall months. They encourage the kids (and parents) to wear their Halloween costumes for some extra fun.
  • Depot to Depot Tour– Enjoy a self-guided color tour, stretching from the Muskegon South Pierhead Light to the White River Light Station. Wind your way along Lake Michigan by car or bicycle along the historic West Michigan Pike Byway. Enter the photo contest to win a prize package from the Muskegon Convention and Visitors Bureau!
  • See the colors from Zipline over a canopy of trees on a 1400 ft. dual zip line at Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park! Their Fall Outdoor Adventure Weekends include:
    • Luge (without ice!) on a one-of-a-kind wheel luge track
    • Climb a 3-sided, 38 ft. outdoor rock climbing wall
    • Archery on a live shooting range
    • Trail Quest – a game combining scavenger hunts & problem-solving on miles of trails.

Get Outdoors

Of course, outdoors lovers look forward to fall hunting season and hauling in a big fish- here are ideas to get at it!

  • Fishing: Fall fishing in Michigan offers beauty in the abundant colors, but the fish are biting too! Since fish like cooler water temperatures, many start to spawn in the fall, using the shallower, more exposed parts of lakes and rivers (like the Muskegon River) to lay their eggs. Take full advantage of this season with Pure Michigan’s fall fishing guide, which is filled with tips and tricks for reeling in the best catch!
  • Hunting: Even though various hunting seasons happen throughout the year, fall is the most popular season to bring home some game. The southern boundaries of the Manistee National Forest are in Muskegon County, and are open to the public. An array of wildlife suitable for hunting may be found on national forests and grasslands. Hunting is a seasonal activity, and the rules are simple: Follow the state laws and regulations pertaining to hunting, including seasons, dates and licensing. Forests and grasslands may place some areas as off limits to hunting. So check in with your local Forest Service ranger to be sure you are following all the rules and visit the Michigan DNR website for further information.
  • It’s not too late to go camping, if you have a cozy camper or even a nice heavy sleeping bag! The campgrounds throughout the area are not as congested in the fall, and there are always campfires burning to warm up your toes and make smores! Check out the county park website for more information.

  • Corn Mazes and haunted houses put the thrill in the season, and Muskegon has them- Weesies Farms in Montague offers a playground and barrel train for tots, the Pumpkin Express that takes visitors to the pumpkin patch and corn maze, and Timber Trail for a great hiking experience.

Food

We can’t forget the marvelous food offered this time of year at local restaurants and bakeries.

Traditions

If you ask anyone who has grown up in this beautiful part of the world what their favorite fall memories are, they’re bound to mention the traditions that they experienced. Here are some places to bring traditions to life:

  • Annual Civil War Muster. Held in September at the Van Raalte Farm Park 1076 East 16th Street, Holland. Van Raalte Farm was originally the home of Civil War veteran Ben Van Raalte, the son of Holland’s founder. Eleven acres of the farm, including two barns and the original farmhouse, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, these timeless structures are part of a 160-acre park providing the perfect backdrop for the sights and sounds of the Civil War coming alive, featuring the Battle of Antietam, encampments of Confederate and Union soldiers, the 1st Holland Regimental Band. Tours of the Grey Barn, an authentic Civil War era saloon, and the Van Raalte home. All events are free, trails throughout the farm are open to the public, and there is even a three-acre dog park on the farm!
  • Apple Orchards and Pumpkin Patches promise a fun time with a reward at the end of the day- yummy apples and pumpkins to carve for your Halloween porch decorations! Kooistra Orchards, 11694 S. Maple Island Rd, Twin Lake, has apples and pumpkins ready to pick or already picked for your family to enjoy.
  • Corn Mazes and haunted houses are part of the season, and the Witches of New Salem in Dorr (4516 24th St, Dorr) takes visitors to the brink of fright with their haunted paths in the Witches Woods, or their horror-filled corn maze. Family-oriented daytime activities are less scary, but altogether a fun time.
  • Dia de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is the annual Mexican holiday when family and friends come together to celebrate death and life. Join the Holland Museum and LAUP (Latin Americans United for Progress) on the last Saturday in October for an afternoon of music, dance, and art activities! View community-created ofrendas, colorful altars with flowers, pictures, and other offerings in remembrance of those who have passed. The event takes place at the Holland Armory, 16 West 9th Street, Holland.

One standout piece in his collection is a miniature World War II B25 bomber hanging from the ceiling, transformed by Villinski into a symbol of hope and generosity, dropping food instead of bombs to shed light on the issue of food scarcity.

September 23, 2024, through March 2, 2025

The Nature of Sculpture: The Nature of Sculpture is the first exhibition to explore the artist’s deep engagement with the natural world as source, subject and site for his art. Working in multiple media, formats, and scales, David Smith’s adventurous approach to three-dimensional form has permanently expanded the vocabulary and range of sculptural practice. Celebrated as the first American artist to make welded metal sculptures—and to incorporate industrial means in his work—Smith’s early enlistment of nature as a material and prime setting for his art was equally innovative. Spanning his full career and featuring major museum loans, the exhibition will include some 40 sculptures, along with related paintings, reliefs, and works on paper to reclaim the primacy of nature within the artist’s richly inventive oeuvre. This exploration of sculpture and nature will have particularly strong resonance at Meijer Gardens, where Smith’s work will be in direct dialogue with the natural environs, including larger pieces situated outdoors to commune with the elements as the artist intended.

Go Apple Picking

Of course, apple picking had to be number 1 on the fall fun kid list. Did you know that Michigan has more than 50 varieties of apple trees scattered across 775 apple farms? September and October are prime apple-picking months in Michigan. Going outside and picking apples is a great way to boost mood. There is something peacefully contagious about spending time outside strolling through the rows of apple trees and finding the best ones to take. Just a few of West Michigan’s local orchards include Crane Orchards U Pick and corn maze, Grandview Orchards, Well’s Orchards, Versluis Orchards, DeKleine Orchards.

Check out our list of Apple Orchards + Donuts- here!

Harvest Chestnuts

Your kids may recognize the famous lyrics, “…chestnuts roasting by an open fire..” DeKleine Orchards is a family-owned business that has been around for over 60 years. They have 1700 chestnut trees that can be harvested from about the middle of October until the end of the year. It’s fascinating to think about how chestnuts were once such a vital food source for settlers and Indians alike. There used to be a tale that there were so many chestnut trees that a squirrel could jump from one to the other all the way from Georgia to New York! Chestnuts are a versatile food that can be enjoyed in many different ways. Kids can also play fall chestnut golf by simply cutting out a couple of archways in a box and labeling them. You can also make a necklace or bracelet by making holes in the chestnuts and letting your child thread the chestnuts onto some string.

Get Lost in a Corn Maze

Exploring a corn maze is not only a thrilling way to spend a day out in the countryside but also a fantastic learning opportunity for the whole family. It encourages problem-solving and communication skills, promotes outdoor exploration, engages all senses, and even helps develop language skills. So, if you’re searching for an outdoor educational activity or a local adventure for your family, a corn maze might be just the thing you need! A few of the local spots include Autumn Harvest Farms, New Salem Corn Maze, Post Family Farm, and Bethke Farms.

Find the Perfect Pumpkin

Visiting a pumpkin patch provides many opportunities to engage and encourage children to learn and grow. A wonderful fall kid adventure to do as a family! By, giving them the freedom to roam around and pick out their very own pumpkin they experience a sense of pride and independence. Have fun finding your perfect pumpkin at Chittenden Farms, Cranes Orchards, or Autumn Harvest Farms. There is also so much more you can do with a pumpkin than just carving it! Try pumpkin painting, decorating, smashing, and composting.

Bake Pumpkin Seeds

I highly recommend trying out this simple and tasty recipe for roasted pumpkin seeds. Begin by cleaning your pumpkin seeds and drying them thoroughly. Next, toss them in a bowl with some olive oil before laying them out flat on a cookie sheet coated in nonstick spray. Set your oven to 300 degrees and bake the seeds for 45 minutes. Once they’re done, toss them with a bit of salt for added flavor and enjoy a healthy and delicious snack!

Time for a Hay Ride!

Kids love fall hayrides! Why wouldn’t they? There is a sense of free-for-all-ness, the thrill of the movement, the cool tractor, and don’t forget the hay itself. Hayrides originated with farmhands and working farm children riding loaded hay wagons back to the barn for unloading. Now, they are a fall activity staple! Check out the rides that are available at Fruitridge Hayrides, Olin Farm, and Cranes Orchards!

Take a trip to the Farmers Market

My family and I love going to the Farmers Market. It’s a great opportunity to get fresh produce and support local farmers. Plus, my kid loves picking out their own fruits and vegetables and learning about where their food comes from. It’s a fun and educational outing for the whole family! Our Farmers Market blog post is a great resource to find the markets nearest to you!

Rake leaves and Jump In!

There’s nothing quite like the joy of playing outside in the fall and jumping in a pile of leaves! It is such a classic childhood experience. Plus, it’s a great way to get some exercise and enjoy the beautiful autumn weather. And best of all, it keeps the mess outside instead of all over your house!

Stop by an Arboretum

If you’re looking for a family-friendly outing that engages all the senses, teaches about sustainability, and introduces children to different cultures and native plants, look no further than Leila Arboretum Society. With over 40,000 visitors each year, the arboretum boasts an impressive array of gardens, walkways, and marked trees and plants. Kids can relax and explore the 1-mile walk/running trail, the Peace Labyrinth, and the Kaleidoscope Garden. Don’t miss the 6,000-square-foot heated greenhouse and the Fantasy Forest, which are sure to delight visitors of all ages.

Collect leaves on a Nature Hike

While on your hike collect leaves to use for fall crafts. Kids can paste them onto construction paper and make a collage. You can make leaf rubbings by placing the leaf under a sheet of paper and rubbing a crayon over the leaf. Kids will love seeing their leaves come to life on the page! Another idea is leaf handprints, simply trace your child’s handprint and then have them decorate the handprint with leaves. The leaves can be the children’s nails or any creative way they want to decorate! Check out some of the Best Hiking Near Grand Rapids.

Make a scarecrow

A homemade scarecrow can be a really cute DIY fall yard display. A perfect fall kid activity! Do you have some old clothes laying around? Whenever you buy your pumpkin, get some hay to stuff your clothes with. All you have to do is tie the ends of the shirt and pants with string to hold in the hay. Then use a plastic pumpkin for the head, find a place for it in your front yard, and sit it on a chair with pumpkins around the feet.

Hide & Seek with Glow Sticks

Hide and Go Seek in the Dark adds a whole other element of thrill! Let the kids head outside at night to play hide and seek with glow sticks! Wear them around your head, wrists, and ankles for a spooky element of the classic game. This activity may become a new Halloween tradition for the family.

Wander around a new park

When the temperatures begin to cool off and the leaves begin to change colors, many of West Michigan’s parks begin to glow! Autumn is a special season to find time in Michigan’s forests, where leaf canopies are blazing red, purple, and gold! This site offers a list of harvests and haunts happening at Michigans state parks.

Make a Sensory Table

Sensory play is so fun for kids and also super crucial for language and motor skill development. Encouraging exploration, curiosity, problem-solving, and creativity helps to build nerve connections in the brain. Enjoy some sensory play at home by filling a bowl or sensory table with dried corn, leaves, and measuring cups. You could also add construction trucks to push and dump the corn and leaves.

Make your own “kid-friendly”  Pumpkin Spice Latte

Heat your choice of milk in a small saucepot over medium heat. Once warmed to your liking, add pumpkin puree, brown sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon. Then mix it up! You can add a sprinkle of pumpkin spice or a shot of espresso for the adults! If your kids like the taste of coffee, use decaf espresso or add in a splash of decaf coffee.

Go on a Fall Drive

Play a game of road trip bingo or I-spy as you appreciate the fall colors. Generally, nature begins to create its gorgeous colorful views starting in mid to late September in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and then shortly thereafter in the lower peninsula. The West Michigan Pike was the first roadway in the state to be paved for tourism specifically! Although this historical route that was originally a 500-mile highway has changed it still encompasses some of the most charming scenery. It follows U.S. Hwy 31, passing through several cities between Buchanan and Mears as it winds along the lakeshore of Lake Michigan.

Create a Corn Husk Doll

Corn husk dolls are a symbol of the harvest season!  This timeless craft originated in Indigenous cultures where corn was a staple crop. The husks were always put to good use in lighting lamps, filling pillows, and making baskets, masks, arrow quivers, ceremonial dolls, and more! This activity is the perfect thing to keep little hands busy at a family gathering. Try your hand at it by laying four or six husks (has to be an even number) in a stack. Then, using thin twine, tie the husks together, about 1 inch from the top. Tie the husks about 1 inch down to create the head. Lastly, roll a single husk and tie it at the ends to make arms.

(H19) As you can see, fall in Michigan provides an array of activities for families of all sizes and ages. Whether you are keen to explore some of the colorful parks or try your hands at a fun fall craft, I hope this article inspired a few new ideas.

Will YOU dare to face the Moonlit Manor?

The Lore:
“Moonlight Manor Theater had been the 1925 height of Vaudeville entertainment. The golden accouterments of the Theater catered to the upper echelon of society.  Only the best entertainers in the world were booked to play the Moonlight Manor Theater.  If your act was booked to play the Moonlight Manor Theater then you knew you had finally “hit the Big Time.”   Nothing but the Best was good enough for Moonlight Manor patrons……

Then cinema, radio and television began to eat their way into the market.  There was no room for “live” entertainment and fewer and fewer dollars were being spent on it.  Live entertainment was too expensive and less exciting than the new entertainment mediums.   Vaudeville houses began to close by the dozens.  Moonlight Manor Theater was no exception.  In 1930 the Theater closed its doors after it’s last show.

In 1940 the Theater was scheduled for demolition.  But when the demolition crews arrived to begin the work, they swore that they saw ghostly apparitions inside the building and unexplainable deeds taking place. They left never to return.

The Theater has stood there ever since.”
