Lyon Street Cafe

If you’re looking for a great place to sip hot coco, coffee or tea this winter with your loved ones, look no further! Not only does this cafe raise money for important causes and donate the funds, but they have the coziest atmosphere and delicious drinks and baked goods to match! Everyone loves a snowy cafe day, so next time you see those pieces of fluff falling from the sky, make a plan to visit Lyon Street Cafe. Bring a book, a journal or just your self or loved ones and enjoy the ambience of a cozy cafe in winter.

Igloo Dining – Brody’s BE Cafe

BE Cafe is a wonderful place to find fun and cozy outdoor dining, like these snow huts! Have your food delivered to these heated outdoor huts and enjoy the winter ambience with your family, a loved one or group of friends! These do require reservations so make sure to check that out on their website. 

Raise a Glass Wine & Drink Tours

Enjoy being chauffeured around the city and experiencing not only lots of yummy food, but also delicious drinks! Avoid having to worry about driving or coordinating travel with friends by scheduling a group or private tour. Great for winter because you spend minimal time outside, but still get to enjoy the aesthetic of the winter season. Not to mention, the hot food and fresh drinks will be sure to keep you warm !

Museums

The Grand Rapids area is well known for its local breweries and eateries, but its culture of arts and history is vastly underappreciated. A great winter activity in the area is to peruse these historical and artsy places, like the GR Public, Art or Kid’s Museums. All of these museums have affordable pricing, and people with memberships get free admission whenever they like throughout the year! So maybe that’s something to consider if you like your trip enough this winter.

Winter Music Scene

All through the winter season, as well as all the others, these venues have the best entertainment as well as an atmosphere for music lovers. For example, Winter Jam is coming up on Jan 19th, featuring SKILLET, Trip Lee, Colton Dixon, and more big names! There’s also Disney on Ice all through the winter season. Broadway Grand Rapids is even performing Moulin Rouge at DeVos Jan 21-26. The Intersection and The Pyramid Scheme are great for seeing up-and-coming bands as well as stuff like their Mega 80s party on Jan 18th from 8pm on, and the show starts at 9pm.

INDOOR WINTER ADVENTURES

Roller Skating

If you need some roller skating vibes in your life, here are a couple of different options for you! GR Skate and Event Center has two locations, in Byron and Kentwood, and is well known for its group events and activities, so it is a great option. Tarry Hall was number one on Yelp! and I’m certain that’s for good reason. Jumpin Jupiter Skate Center not only has a cool name, but a cool vibe as well with its neon decor and arcade room off to the side. All these places have some lite snacks and drinks to enjoy as well as games and special events throughout the year, so make sure to check the website links above for their full winter schedule!

BattleGR Tactical Games

Practice your sports skills at this games and sports complex, featuring things like laser tag, archery tag, axe throwing and so much more! You can check out their indoor pricing here as well as event schedules, how to rent a private party and even reserve spots far ahead of time to make sure you get to play exactly when you want to! Test your skills and maybe your friendships at this world-renowned gaming complex. 

OUTDOOR WINTER ADVENTURES

GR World of Winter

Escape to the wonderful World of Winter in Grand Rapids! At this festival, you will find endless ice sculptures and other art by locals, dazzling drone light performances, live music (like Hip-Hop Opera), one-of-a-kind food trucks, and so much more. The event is free, so you can save your money to buy some delicious food or maybe purchase a keepsake from one of the artisans involved in the festival! It is also family friendly so this would be one of the best winter activities for families in Grand Rapids! Don’t miss this annual and well-loved event. Sledding/Skiing

Honor your inner child – or your actual children – and go sledding this winter! There are endless options in the Grand Rapids area for sledding, and a few of them even have what’s called sled “libraries” where they allow anyone to borrow a sled while they’re there if they don’t have one! We think that’s pretty cool, since everyone deserves to sled. PAUL VILLINKSI: Flight Pattern

March 29- Aug 18, ALL DAY

Paul Villinski’s art takes us on a whimsical journey through the sky, exploring the magic of flight in all its forms. As a certified pilot, Villinski’s creations soar with butterflies, birds, airplanes, and dreamy humans, all taking flight in his imaginative world. Using everyday objects like aluminum cans, knives, and vinyl records, he breathes new life into discarded items, turning them into intricate sculptures that speak volumes about addiction and the environment. One standout piece in his collection is a miniature World War II B25 bomber hanging from the ceiling, transformed by Villinski into a symbol of hope and generosity, dropping food instead of bombs to shed light on the issue of food scarcity.

Each indoor and outdoor exhibit is shaped with a focus on wildlife conservation and preservation. The 100-acre park located on the west side of Grand Rapids is home to over 2,000 animals, including tigers, lions, penguins, and more!

Places to Eat:

Bird’s Nest

Located in the Forest Realm, 21+ guests can enjoy craft or domestic beers, Dippin Dots, and soft pretzels in the Forest Realm. The Forest Realm is a beautiful outdoor space with delicious snacks and plenty of seating. Right next to the Bird’s Nest is the amphitheater that offers a nice shade area featuring bench seating and a stage where you can find Daily Animal Programs. 

Lion’s Den

Enjoy a refreshing cold slushie in a signature souvenir bottle, perfect for a hot day. Choose from a variety of flavors, including fruit punch, blue raspberry, and cherry. And don’t forget to grab some fresh roasted nuts, popcorn, or cotton candy to go! The nuts are roasted to perfection and are a great source of protein and fiber. The popcorn is light and fluffy, and the cotton candy is sweet and delicious. All of these snacks are perfect for a quick bite or a picnic in the park.

Monkey Bar

Located by our Spider Monkey Exhibit, guests can enjoy a variety of craft beers, seltzers, or a cold slushie with a shot of rum or Jack Daniels. Roasted nuts are also available for those with an empty stomach! The snack bar is a great place to relax and enjoy a drink while watching the spider monkeys swing from the trees. The monkeys are always entertaining, and the snack bar offers a variety of drinks to choose from. Whether you’re looking for a cold beer on a hot day or a refreshing slushie on a hot day, the snack bar has you covered.

Whistle Stop

John Ball Zoo is a proud purveyor of Hudsonville Ice Cream, a delicious and creamy ice cream made with fresh milk and cream from local farms. Stop by the Whistle Stop next to the Hobby Farm today to get your favorite flavor, or try one of our new seasonal flavors. They also have a basket of hand-tossed tenders for a quick and easy snack.

Dippin Dots

.Stop here for your favorite flavor of Dippin’ Dots! These small, spherical ice cream beads are flash-frozen at -40 degrees Fahrenheit, which keeps them from melting even in warm weather. You can also grab a bag of popcorn or a soft pretzel. The popcorn is fresh and hot, and the pretzels are soft and chewy. You can wash it all down with a can of soda or water.

Tiger Paws Pizza

Savor fresh pizza and breadsticks while your children play in the Treetop Outpost, a supervised play area with slides, climbing structures, and a ball pit. The ever-popular Pineapple Dole Whip is also available here. Guests 21 and older can enjoy the Dole Whip Moscato Floats, a delicious combination of Dole Whip and sparkling Moscato wine, or a cold beer.

Depot Snacks

This place is conveniently located near the front entrance, making it the perfect first or last stop of your day! Mini Donuts and Cappuccino are great morning choices, while Dippin Dots, Pretzel Bites, and some fresh-made healthy options are available all day long.

Monkey Island Café

The zoo’s main eatery offers a wide variety of lunch and snack items, from hot dogs and fries to chicken tenders and burgers. There is something for everyone here! This is also the place to get a soft-serve ice cream cone after a hot day at the zoo. 

Zoo Experiences 

John Ball Zoo Gem Company

Choose from 3 Gem Bags to pan for your very own gems! Pour the contents of your bag onto your screen to reveal your treasures. The Pay Dirt bag costs $8.99 and contains 6 ounces of Gemstone Mix. The Emerald Strike bag costs $14.99 and contains 6 ounces of Gemstones and 3 ounces of emeralds. The Motherlode bag costs $29.99 and contains a little bit of everything, including Gemstone Mix, Fossil Mix, Shark Teeth, Arrowheads, and a large piece of Amethyst Druzy.

Face Painting

The face painting station is located in the central part of the zoo, next to the aquarium. This is a very popular spot for children. They can choose to have their face painted like one of their favorite animals, either on one cheek or the entire face.

Red Panda Pit Stop

 After you say hello to Wyatt and Wasabi, the red pandas, visit the gift shop located on the deck by the Red Panda Habitat. They have a variety of plush toys, souvenirs, and other fun items to take home as a reminder of your visit.

Budgie Aviary

The interactive Budgie Aviary is a must-see for any bird lover! Located near the waterfall and Hobby Farm, you can walk through a large enclosure with over 150 colorful budgies, 4 cockatiels, and 18 white-winged parakeets. You can even purchase a feed stick and have these beautiful birds eating right out of your hand! It is located at the bottom of the waterfall near Red’s Hobby Farm.

Camel Rides

Take a camel ride at the zoo and experience one of the most amazing animals in the world! You’ll get to take a picture with your new friend, too. Camel rides are located in the Africa section between the meerkats and tigers.

Funicular Train

If you want to take the funicular to the top of the zoo, go to the lower depot as soon as they enter. When guests get off at the highest point of the zoo they are greeted with a stunning view of downtown Grand Rapids. They can then explore the zoo on foot, walking entirely downhill. This is ideal for guests with strollers. Visitors can take a funicular down to the main entrance of the zoo after exploring the Forest Realm Trail near the red pandas and Bissell Tree House. This will avoid retracing their steps.

Ropes Course

This four-story, two-level ropes course has over 15 obstacles of varying difficulty that will test your courage and strength. It’s a lot of fun! If you’ve mastered all the elements before, be prepared for new and challenging obstacles to conquer.

Zipline

This four-story, 600-foot zipline is the real deal! Riders are securely harnessed before they step off the platform and soar over the waterfall to another ridge. Children must be at least 70 pounds and 48 inches tall to fit securely into the harness.

Extra Educational Experiences 

Guided Tours

Have the zoo all to yourself on a private tour of your favorite area! A zoo educator will answer all of your questions as you explore the North America and Aquarium, Natural Treasures and Chimpanzees, or Red Pandas and Meerkats. Tours last about 45 minutes.

Sneak A Peek

Join John Ball Zoo for a sneak peek behind the scenes of the habitats that guests see every day. You and up to 15 other people will join zoo staff for a behind-the-scenes tour to see where the animals spend their time while not on exhibit and learn how much goes into caring for the animals at the zoo.

Penguin Feeding

Join a zookeeper on the penguin deck to feed these fascinating birds! You’ll also learn about the daily care that goes into keeping the fish, penguins, sharks, and marine invertebrates healthy and happy in their aquarium habitats.

Penguin Encounter

Have a close encounter with some of our Magellanic Penguins. Meet up to 2 penguins and their zookeeper in a private, behind-the-scenes meeting area. Learn about the penguin colony and the special care zoo keepers provide them with daily. 

Brown Bear Encounter

Here’s your chance to feed the bears! Start your day by entering the bear enclosure to distribute the morning diet and enrichment. Chat with the zookeeper who cares for them and get a behind-the-scenes look at the bears’ habitat.

Introducing ZooLittles Preschool

John Ball Zoo is launching a nature-play program that will provide young children with learning experiences through play and exploration of the natural world. The program will focus on relationships with oneself, others, and the natural world.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit the zoo is early in the morning or just before closing, as animals are more active and there are fewer visitors. School groups often visit the zoo on weekdays in the morning from March to May and in September. If you enjoy the energy and excitement of children, this is a great time to visit. They recommend that you allow yourself two to three hours to see most of the zoo. Even better, visit often and explore a different part of the zoo each time. To avoid large crowds, visit John Ball Zoo during off-peak times. Fall and winter are typically less crowded than summer and holidays. Weekdays, non-holidays, and early mornings are also generally less crowded.

Ebony Road Players, Local Theater

Ebony Road Players, a local theater company in Grand Rapids, aims to inspire, educate, and engage the community with high-quality theater productions centered on the Black experience. Founded in 2014 by Edye Evans Hyde to provide youth with a creative outlet, the company addresses the lack of artistic representation in the city. Their inaugural production was a staged reading of “When the Rain” and more by Ntozake Shange, followed by full productions in subsequent years. They host an annual Loving Day celebration, including an Arts Advocacy Awards Ceremony fundraiser, and showcase upcoming shows like “Anne and Emmitt” by Janet Langhart Cohen. The Last Mile, Coffee, Tea & Pastries

One reddit user described this coffee shop with one simple word: vibes. We could not agree more, so we had to share this spot with you! Imagine yourself sipping on a delicious drink, maybe a pastry and reading or doing one of your favorite hobbies. This seems like a great place to work on personal projects or maybe even co-work with a friend or two. This cafe is one of the tastiest hidden gems we’ve found so far AND it’s a great place to build your community!

Sapporo Ramen & Noodle Bar

We won’t lie to you, this one made us hungry just writing about it! Scrolling through the Yelp review photos was just torture because this unique food spot just looks absolutely delicious. Rather than table service, you get to pick up your food when called and then sit wherever you like – great for casual dining with a fine dining taste. If you’ve been looking for a good place to eat or introduce yourself to the world of ramen, this gem is one you should uncover as soon as possible! Grand a friend and perhaps go get a bite to eat before you finish this whole GR Hidden Gem tour. 

Historical

Historic White Pine Village

If you are a history nerd or just happen to love one, this is a town you have to stop by. There are endless historical sites, including but not limited to things like: maritime museum, historical society, lumbering museums, museum of music, village time museum, a fire station, artisan center and much more. This would be an all day event, so make sure to plan ahead and look at the opening hours for each place you’d like to visit. You can find all the exhibits and detailed information on each site here. Little Traverse History Museum

If you love looking at historical photography, LTHM has a wondrous collection of such items! Not only do they have some intriguing photos of old sailors, but they also have several different study clubs involving art, history, women’s suffrage, and more! What’s really unique about this museum is that they offer VIRTUAL tours on their website! Just click the link to their website above and the menu item that says “Virtual Visit” to check out all the different options. This museum offers some of the most exhibits, activities, and day-to-day involved activities that we’ve seen at a local history museum, so definitely make this one a priority for your next-day trip!

West Michigan is the perfect region for growing healthy foods. The climate is always conducent to strawberries, blueberries, and even apples! That’s why there’s an abundance of growers who offer u-pick patches and orchards. So, smear on a little sunscreen, grab a water bottle, and head out to some of the venues listed below!

Bonus: The variety of fruits guarantees that you’re busy throughout the different seasons, so you have plenty of time to enjoy each one. We’re concentrating on strawberries, blueberries, and throwing apples in for good measure! However, you can also find other types of fruit here in beautiful, bountiful, west Michigan!

Berries are a delicious way to add to your healthy diet, whether fresh or frozen. Washed berries can be stored in airtight containers in the freezer for a year, so you can enjoy them in the winter months, as well! Check out these pick farms in Kent, Ottawa, and Muskegon Counties.

Be sure to call ahead! Most contact information is available on the websites, and each place can recommend the best time to visit so that you’ll get the ripest, most flavorful berries!

Strawberry Season and U-Pick Berries Venues

Strawberry season usually lasts from mid-June to mid-July in west Michigan and, depending on the weather and the proximity of the always-cooler Lake Michigan, there’s a difference throughout the region for the best time to harvest them. It’s recommended that you check prior to visiting the patches, as they can be picked over quite often during the season.

Also, make sure to keep the freshly picked fruit cool and out of the sun. Wash well with cold water and store them in the refrigerator until you want to enjoy them. They also make great snacks to nibble on later. Do this by freezing them on baking sheets and packing them in airtight containers for later use. Homemade strawberry jam is a great option, too!

Kent County

  • Krupp Farms: 8025 Krupp Avenue, Comstock Park, MI. This fourth-generation centennial farm is popular for their u-pick strawberries and raspberries. They also have a petting zoo, ice cream shop, and playground. While not a totally organic farm, they employ many ecologically friendly practices.

Muskegon County

  • Veenstras Family Farm: 8515 S. 200th Avenue, Holton, MI. A lovely drive into the countryside will take you to the family’s U-pick patch, which has been in operation for over 50 years. Check their Facebook page to pick dates and times.

Ottawa County

  • Visser Farms: 7200 112th Avenue, Holland, MI. In 1902, Dutch immigrants Marinus and Maria Staal settled on muck land that possesses rich, black soil. They built a homestead and barns and began living their dream with their two children. In the mid 1920s, their daughter and her husband continued the dream and renamed the Visser Farm farm. Their ten children have carried on the tradition and stewardship of the land, using biological and natural disease prevention solutions as much as possible.

Blueberry Season and U-Pick Berries Venues

Who doesn’t love blueberries? With over 30 varieties grown in our beautiful region, this popular summer berry is one of the state’s most productive crops. Blueberry season usually runs from July through September and sometimes longer.

Many farms welcome you to “pick your own” and enjoy the adventure of a fun farm experience. Remember that frozen blueberries are almost as good a fresh —throw them in muffins and pancakes on a cold winter morning to bring back the fun memories you made in the summer.

Kent County

•    Heritage Blueberry Farm: 12151 Stebbins, Sparta, MI. This place offers three wonderful acres of u-pick blueberries and a picnic area. It is a quiet place to establish a family tradition and to harvest some lasting memories along with healthy blueberries!

Muskegon County

  • Palmer’s Blueberries: 4099 Dame Road, Whitehall, MI 49461. A fun drive to Whitehall will take you to Palmer’s blueberry farm, which has been in business for 50 years. Bring a lunch and enjoy their picnic area, and browse their other blueberry products for sale —including preserves, blueberry syrup, blueberry mustard, and blueberry BBQ sauce.

Ottawa County

  • Reenders Blueberry Farms: 9981 West Olive rd (US 31), West Olive, MI. With 800 acres of land, the Reenders Farm offers 12 varieties of blueberries for u-pick customers. Their new store carries something for everyone. In addition to fresh blueberries, other local fruits (when available), such as raspberries, cherries, and peaches, await. They also have many flavors of jam, honey, and syrup. Not enough? Don’t forget your Michigan souvenir, their famous blueberry pie, some muffins, candy, shirts, scented air sprays, canned fruit and vegetables, gourmet flavored caramel corn, a large selection of seasonings, spreads, dips, and of course, replica Reenders toy semi-trucks, and more!

Apple Season and U-Pick Orchards

Okay, so apples aren’t technically a berry, but they are very popular as a U-pick adventure! And, unlike berries, they can be stored in a cool, dry, dark place for weeks. Countless varieties are available, and apple harvest begins in late summer until snow falls. Get our full list here!

  • Fruit Ridge Farm: 11966 Fruit Ridge NW, Kent City, MI. Located just minutes northwest of Grand Rapids, in the heart of Michigan’s fruit-growing region, known as “The Ridge.” On The Ridge, you’ll find an abundance of apple orchards, farm markets, and cider mills. The proximity of ‘The Ridge’ to Lake Michigan, combined with the rolling hills and heavy clay soil, make this an ideal place to grow apples and other fruit! Hayrides, a corn maze, and more complement the U-pick experience.
  • Grange Avenue Market and Upick Orchard: 1900 13 Mile Road Northeast, Rockford, MI 49341. Offering honeycrisp apples, the most sought-after variety, along with Brookfield Gala, JonaGold, and Rising Sun Fuji! They even provide the buckets and bags for ease in picking!

Muskegon County

  • Dietrichs Harvest Basket: 17485 Apple Avenue, Casnovia, MI. Lots of u-pick options ranging from asparagus to blueberries and sweet corn to peaches, apples, and pumpkins. Not to mention, this place is a solid contender with wagon rides, picnic areas, and a petting zoo!
  • Kooistra Orchards: 11694 S. Maple Island Rd., Twin Lake, MI. Technically in Newaygo County, Kooistra Orchards has been a favorite of local families and neighbors who love their pick of tasty and fresh apples since 2008.  Many families have been enjoying the Kooistra Orchards for generations.

Ottawa County

  • DK Orchards: 18203 8th Ave, Conklin, MI. Enjoy a variety of produce, with apples being the main fruit they grow. Their wide varieties range from Gala to McIntosh, Empire, Jonathan, Northern Spy, Red Delicious, Early Fuji, Snow Sweet, Jonagold, Golden Delicious, Ida Red, and Honeycrisp! You can also pick peaches and blueberries while picking up pumpkins, gourds, corn, and other vegetables.
  • Crane Orchards: 6054 124th Ave., Fennville, MI. This u-pick farm not only has u-pick apples, peaches, and cherries, but it also offers the chance to ride a cow train! Their 20-acre corn maze is one of the biggest around. New this year is a magical holiday drive-through light show, coming in November. With a mile of lit winter wonderland, experience the orchard like never before and enjoy holiday magic from the comfort of your car.
