The Nature of Sculpture: The Nature of Sculpture is the first exhibition to explore the artist’s deep engagement with the natural world as source, subject and site for his art. Working in multiple media, formats, and scales, David Smith’s adventurous approach to three-dimensional form has permanently expanded the vocabulary and range of sculptural practice. Celebrated as the first American artist to make welded metal sculptures—and to incorporate industrial means in his work—Smith’s early enlistment of nature as a material and prime setting for his art was equally innovative. Spanning his full career and featuring major museum loans, the exhibition will include some 40 sculptures, along with related paintings, reliefs, and works on paper to reclaim the primacy of nature within the artist’s richly inventive oeuvre. This exploration of sculpture and nature will have particularly strong resonance at Meijer Gardens, where Smith’s work will be in direct dialogue with the natural environs, including larger pieces situated outdoors to commune with the elements as the artist intended.

Fred & Dorothy Fichter Butterflies Are Blooming

A guest favorite, Fred & Dorothy Fichter Butterflies Are Blooming is the largest temporary tropical butterfly exhibition in the United States featuring butterflies from three tropical zones: Asia, Central and South America, and Africa. More than 60 species of butterflies and moths take flight in the 15,000-square-foot Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory. Throughout the exhibition, butterflies can be viewed drinking nectar from flowering plants and feeding stations, flying freely within the five-story tropical conservatory. The blue common morpho, clearwing and Atlas moth—with its impressive 6-to-12-inch wingspan—are expected to make appearances.
Approximately 1,000 chrysalides are delivered to Meijer Gardens weekly. Visitors may watch delicate chrysalides and cocoons being placed in the Observation Station, where the unique creatures transform and take their first flight.

Get excited, fellow wanderers! Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is throwing their annual, mesmerizing event that is known as the “Butterflies are Blooming” exhibition. Imagine a kaleidoscope of nature featuring over 7,000 butterflies and moths fluttering in a symphony of hues. There are over 60 species of butterflies represented at this exhibit for wanderers to watch as they dance and fly about. This is the perfect activity for nature lovers, families or people who just love to be in awe! Whatever the case, keep reading to learn more about this highly anticipated yearly event.

Butterflies of Paradise
This exhibition takes flight on March 1 and goes all the way until April 30th and members can go early on Sundays from 9AM-11AM. The entire exhibition is housed within the awe-inspiring five-story Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory. You might feel like you’ve entered a tropical paradise, as the conservatory has to be kept at high temps and humidity to accommodate our colorful flying friends. Make sure to wear layers, as they keep it at a toasty 85 degrees, complemented by a lush 70% humidity.
Diverse Species & Global Origins
Get ready for a charming spectacle as exotic butterflies make themselves at home. Hailing from Central and South America, with a touch of tropical Asia and Africa, these winged wonders create a captivating display. It’s like taking a West Michigan safari into a vibrant world where Michigan embraces global hues in a colorful, fluttering wave.
The different kinds of species you might find include but aren’t limited to: the blue morpho, clearwing, lacewing, zebra mosaic, swallowtail, golden helicon, paper kite, atlas moth, and the African moon moth. The blue morpho, with its iridescent wings stealing the celestial spotlight, is the crowd-pleaser—the showstopper in this captivating carnival of nature.
Witness a Metamorphosis
The one part you might NOT want to miss is the weekly cocoon hatching! Yes you heard right – you get to witness up to 1000 butterflies emerge from their chrysalis, completing their metamorphosis and flying into their new life. You can stand in awe of the beauty and the metaphor!

The annual Tulip Time Festival is a gorgeous and unforgettable trip back in time. Since 1939, the unmistakable dutch architecture, vivid colors, flowers, and foliage have been taking our breath away—residents and tourists alike—as this town grew into what it is today. It’s not hard to see why this festival and beautifully historic town would win international and local hearts, together! The tunnel entrance to the beach is built beneath a sand dune—giving you a one-of-a-kind perspective and view of the water as well as the beach.

If you haven’t heard of Laugh Fest you’re missing out! This event is the first of it kind, featuring famous comedic talent like Whoopi Goldberg, Seth Meyers, Ali Wong, Kevin Hart, and more! This fest is sponsored by Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids, who are dedicated to supporting all humans in their grief, especially those affected by cancer. There are a couple different places to find unique activities for you, your friends, and family this spring! Allegan Event offers indoor rope courses, zip lines, and rock climbing as well delicious food to refuel after all the fun games. Another place to have an absolute blast would be Battle GR, which we’ve written about before and for good reason! They’re offering archery tag games that are unlike anything you’ve played before. Pick teams and use perfectly safe and soft arrows to win against each other, using different obstacles and tents on the field to help you hide.
Lighthouses
Did you know Michigan has more lighthouses than any other state? Stretched throughout this gorgeous state you’ll find many, so make sure to make them a part of your beach day if you plan on being near some water during your 2024 Spring Break visit! One of the most well known lighthouses is in Holland, Michigan and is known as “Big Red” by the locals. This is one of the most photographed spots in the whole state, and one look at any photo featuring Big Red will tell you why. Enjoy amazing views, beach breezes, and local fare while adventuring lake side.
If you’re the quieter type, no matter if it’s spring break or not, consider some of these relaxing and creative destinations. Go on a coffee tour of the local favorites or simply sip on a delicious latte while perusing the best art museums the city has to offer.
While you can always check out the Grand Rapids Public Museum, as well, the kids museum is perfect for a family vacation! Distance From Gand Rapids: 20 to 50 miles; 40 to 90 minutes
Why we suggest it: As mentioned above, the tree tunnel spans about 20 to 30 miles on M-119 and gives you the most beautiful natural arches covered with foliage! Just imagine what the trees will look like as they spring (literally) back to life! Drive through this scenic route and find the following amazing places along the way. Below, we’ve listed a couple choice stops along this particular route!
Horton Bay General Store – Boyne City This stop is the favorite of a famous historical figure—Ernest Hemingway! Hemingway spent time at this shop and you can still get old fashioned malts, small bites, and more!
Harbor Springs With parks, nature preserves, and even a farmhouse getaway with a petting zoo and fine dining, you’ll be certain to enjoy your time here.
Petoskey Area This area has many activities that will certainly interest you, but our favorites are the Odawa Casino and Bear River Valley. The casino has luxurious amenities and entertaining performances while Bear River Valley provides a setting to enjoy the beauty of nature.
Sleeping Bear Dunes
Distance From Grand Rapids: 160 miles northwest; 2 hour and 45-minute drive
Why we suggest it: If you’re a lover of beaches and beautiful scenery, the dunes of Sleeping Bear need to be a top priority! See some of purest blue water, explore islands and lighthouses among the lakes, and snuggle with a loved one beneath the stars. This is a famous and highly traveled destination for good reason—the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore has been named, “the Most Beautiful Place in America” on shows like ABC’s Good Morning America in 2011 and again in 2017. After enjoying the areas historic lighthouses, lovely museums, and fine wineries, you may want to challenge yourself with the Dune Climb. You can even bring your bike along! There are so many places and ways to explore on your road trip, especially Pyramid Point!
Bonus Travel Tip: Hit up the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive: It’s a 7-mile scenic route that takes you to the spectacular overlooks of Lake Michigan, Glen Lake, and the Sleeping Bear Dunes. There are two picnic stops along the way perfect for a family outing or romantic date.

This crew spoils its guests with tasty local fare, wine and beer samples, and whatever information you’d like to know about the city. They also teach anyone who wants to learn the basics of sailing by letting them help them throughout the tour. There are different tours to choose from, ranging in prices, length and activities. This is a must-try for any boat or water lovers out there!

There are so many tours you can take to learn about or just simply enjoy the city of Chicago. One of the most popular choices is the Chicago River Front Cruise Tour for only $47. Plus, you don’t even have to pay it right away to reserve your spot! You can also take a tour of the famous Sky Deck, visit the bean, or make your own coffee shop hop. You obviously can’t go to Chicago without trying their famous deep dish styled pizza! The top three pizza joints in Chicago according to trip advisor are:
Since you already can’t go wrong with most pizza, we just know your taste buds are going to be satisfied with any of these places during your trip. Great for family outings or date nights alike!
Another recommendation our team can’t go without mentioning is Chicago Bagel Authority (CBA). They have two locations and boast the “best sandwiches since 1998”. The menu is full of options for breakfast, “Steamwiches”, Snacks, Soups, Salads, and more! If you’re looking for a place to stop along your road trip for a great meal that is also memorable, you’ll have to give CBA a try.

There’s so much rich history as well as culturally diverse and simply beautiful art to explore in the City of Chicago. If you’re on a family vacation, you might want to check out the Field Museum or Adler Planetarium! There are also a variety of art museums to choose from, but one of the most popular is the Art Institute Chicago.
