Treasure the Michigan State Stone: A Petoskey Stone

Lakeshore Stones LLC is located in Alanson, Michigan, where they create unique concepts with Michigan stones, all of the Petoskey Stones are from Michigan! What makes the Petoskey Stone so special is that it is a beautiful, natural wonder that is unique to the state of Michigan. What is so cool about this business is that it started 10 years ago when Brady, the owner, bought his daughter a 3-pound tumbler for her birthday. Together, they would wander the shores of Lake Michigan in Charlevoix, looking for Petoskey Stones, to polish and make into gifts. This quickly took off and soon turned into a full-time job for him.

There are so many reasons to shop local. But when you really think about it, supporting local businesses actually creates a win-win situation for everyone in the community. You get a personal buying experience, the crafter and employees get their livelihood, and the community gets the taxes. So, I say, when in doubt about whether to buy from a big box store or buy locally, think about how you are helping your community every time you purchase something from a small local business. I mean, where else are you going to find all-natural Michigan teas, original art prints, and crafted with love honey soap?
