Michigan’s state parks system was established in 1919 after the passage of Public Act 218, which created the Michigan State Park Commission to acquire lands for state parks. Most of Michigan’s early state parks were acquired by the state through land donations of private individuals. Yearly, over 30 million visitors enjoy the 103 state parks and recreation areas (with new parks in Saginaw and Flint underway).
In West Michigan, there are plenty of state parks within driving distance, with endless fun and recreation possibilities. Some offer campsites for extended stays. You can reserve your spot 6 months in advance. Reserve online at MiDNRReservations.com or call 1-800-44-PARKS.

If you see an immense dune of golden sand that sweeps from the shores of Lake Michigan, you have arrived. The 728-acre park extends from the soft sand beach at the base of the dune inland to Duck Lake. A day-use area includes a swimming beach, picnic tables, grills, and a shelter. A walk on the boardwalk along the channel, joining the two lakes, is a treat in itself!
Established in 1996, this 92-mile long linear rail trail state park is a unique part of the Michigan State Park System. The trail extends from northern Grand Rapids to Cadillac, and it lies on the path graded for the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad. Bring your bikes or just take a stroll and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
This might be one of the smallest parks, but it is big on fun! Set along a half-mile of sandy Lake Michigan shoreline along the west side of the park and the Grand River along the north side of the park.
The park showcases one of Michigan’s most photographed lighthouses, warmly referred to as “Big Red.” Throughout the summer months, they occasionally offer tours.

The other is the modern Beach Campground, offering 98 paved campsites, 31 with full hook-ups.
Lake Michigan fun includes boating and fishing on Lake Michigan, easily accessible through the park’s boat launches.
The park is home to three miles of breathtaking shoreline (2 miles along Lake Michigan and 1 mile on Muskegon Lake), Snug Harbor, forested dunes, two campgrounds, picnic areas, multiple trails and a special treat for winter enthusiasts.
An Olympian-designed luge course housed at the Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park is one of three luge tracks in the United States and offers a “Learn to Luge Program.” In addition, they provide the luge, helmet, and pads to make the 25-mile-per-hour trip down the track not only exhilarating but safe. P.J. Hoffmaster State Park, home to the Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center, is where you can learn how the forested dunes in the park developed. The Dune Overlook Trail is a central attraction in the park, where the half-mile roundtrip hike has about 220 steps. Benches provide rest stops along the way.
In addition to the towering dunes, the park has 3 miles of Lake Michigan coastline, 10 miles of trails with beautiful views, and a modern campground.
Naturalists love to hike through this 900-acre park three miles north of Saugatuck. Nearly 14 miles of peaceful trails knit through the forested peaks and valleys of sand. The paths eventually emerge onto barren dunes—and miles of sand beach.

Nearby, Little Sable Point Lighthouse stands 107 feet tall on the 70-foot dunes. It’s Michigan’s tallest lighthouse with 130 steps and is open to climb to the top from late May until late September.
In addition to the 3 miles of Lake Michigan coastline, the park offers a day-use area on the inland lake, Silver Lake. One advantage to Silver Lake is the water tends to be warmer than Lake Michigan.
